Scrambler Tires on a pregen?
So If I found a cheap pregen with no plastics on it (pretty easy this time of year) and wanted to make a scrambler out of it with some mild off road capability.
What are my tire options? I'm looking around and found a Bridgestone Trail Wing TW40 in 120/90-16 and it is listed as a front and rear tire for the NX250. It should work for a rear correct? But I would think it is too wide for the front. edit to add, thinking now of these: Front: http://www.bikebandit.com/tires-tube...otorcycle-tire Rear: http://www.bikebandit.com/tires-tube...otorcycle-tire or http://www.bikebandit.com/tires-tube...otorcycle-tire Thoughts? |

Trail wings are ....eh.
The duro is ok. I have some cool tires I bought to build my virago. They may be too big for the front though.

This is listed as a rear tire, would it work on the front?

I wasn't searching for a cheap bike I was searching for a more expensive bike, but the cheap one just popped up.
But $300 for a pregen that runs, even if it doesn't have any plastic on it, is hard to pass up. I've got a pregen for myself, another one that's been converted to a Cafe' racer, and 2 more for my kids. But another son has started riding, he really wants something he can take off road a bit on dirt roads and 2 track trails. Can't find a cheap dual sport so I'm thinking outside the box, but still in the box I know. |

I thought of searching for a cheap bike... Then I remembered Florida mod 6R!
That's how it usually goes, bikes are like tools, one never really can have too many. I'd take a $300 prefer anyday! Well anyday I had a extra $300 hahaha

I'd be scared to have that on the front. Front knobs are a bit more round. Personally, I'd run the duros and lift the front fender up a bit.

First post. Bumping... Was searching in forums, this is the only thread related to my search. Recently bought a police auction 2006 ninja 250r with 2k miles on it. It is currently getting serviced, but I was considering turning it into a scrambler would any of those tires would actually serve as front and rear tires? What's the recommended size for the front? The rear? Thank you. Great forum btw. While looking through found members are helpful

I, too, am searching for dirt / dual / nobbie tire options for a little scrambler-type build for my pregen. Would love to hear what others have used.

I would suggest doing a 17" swap. Then you can run a Mitas E-07 rear with a TKC 60 front. That's a great combo.

Sharp looking bike. Forgive my newbie question, but are these pregens 16 front and back while the 2008's on are 17?

Nevermind...sigh. It's looking like a swap to 17" is the only option, though I'm holding out a little hope for scooter enduros, ha.

It's going to be near impossible to find an 'off road' tire in 16" sizes. (A quick look, and I didn't find anything....) The 17" swap is not too difficult these days thanks to the influx of newer generation Ninja parts that will (mostly) bolt right on.
I've spent the last 2 weeks doing just that - though not for dual sport tires - and am waiting on a few parts to tie up the loose ends. Should be done later this week... I don't have a thread up currently, but will be posting one within a day or two to help other members along the same route, if they so choose. If you're really going for the scrambler thing, you may want to look into mounting some handlebars rather than using the stock clip-ons. Good leverage via wide bars is going to make a huge difference in how the bike feels over loose terrain. Another member here has already done that. See his thread here --> (https://www.ninjette.org/forums/show...=117957&page=2) |

I've never had these types of bars so don't really know what to expect off-road. I'll only be on soft-to-medium dirt roads and was a fairly skilled technical dirt rider, but that was years ago. I do expect to still be capable, but comfortable bars of a good height may be more important than I've prioritized. But for now, yes, the tires are my first issue to resolve, as that'll set up the rest of the bike. I am really looking forward to seeing what's involved in switching them out to 17's. I'm intimidated by the idea of attacking this, but have my heart set on a dirt-friendly ride...which means dirt capable tires. Sigh. Show me the way, oh great wheel changer, show me the way!

Awesome! I've been searching for tyres like this for mine but every shop I've called are too lazy to check whether they can get them or just aren't interested. I may have to see about ordering from the US and shipping to Australia.
Have you put any more km on them? |

I haven't my son has been riding it a bit.
I did check the tire pressure before he took it out for a ride and both front and rear were at 20 psi, so I took them up the recommended amount. That may have been the reason for the heavy steering feel as my son said the steering felt the same as the old tires to him. We both have a busy schedule through next weekend, and weather doesn't look that good either. |

Thanks for the info. Will be good to hear how they go longterm. I've still no luck finding those tyres or similar locally which is a pita because I'm kind of set on that style of tyre...
Thanks again.

I know this is an old thread but I am thinking about using the same set up. These tires are tube type. I read some people mount them on mags with no tube. Did you use tubes? Any thought from others, tube or no tube?
