Bike runs weird after crash
Hey, I'm back...
So, about a month ago I had to go down in order to avoid an accident. The bike hit the ground on its left side, but no major damages were caused other than the fairings going to s*it, at least I hope so. I could not get the bike started after to get it home, came back a day later to haul it home, and of course, it started right up as it got home- whatever. The issue I am having now is that when the bike is supposed to enter/reach powerband, 8-10k rpm, it just does not want to do it. I cannot go faster than 60-65mph, and if I give it full throttle it even slows down, and the bike does not rev over 8000rpm in higher gears. First and second gears it's able to go above 10k, but not in any higher gear. So far...I have cleaned the carbs in case of the impact shaking some debris loose. Cleaned the fuel filter in the tank and the tank, there was a decent amount of rust on it and installed an in-line fuel filter as well. I was thinking the fuel was restricted but it all seems to be fine. I have still to check for vacuum leaks, but I ran the bike with the tank in prime, so I do not believe it is a vac issue. Could it be an electrical problem, out of sync carbs, maybe running lean? I am clueless at this point and would greatly appreciate ideas to what it could be, maybe someone had this happen to them and found a solution. Thank you |

1. Carefully inspect rubber boots between head and carbs. Did any of 4-junctions get pulled apart causing vacuum leak?
If there was rust, it may have found its way downstream. 2. Test petcock flow-rate. Unplug fuel hose from carbs and aim into measuring cup. Turn petcock to prime for 30-sec. How much petrol did you collect in measuring cup? 3. Test float levels without removing carbs! Slip hose over float-bowl drain nipples and aim into empty measuring cup. Drain both float bowls. How much petrol did you collect in measuring cup? 4. Pull plugs and post photos of them. Wondering if speed-loss is due to lean or rich mixtures? |

just an aside.....may or may not be associated to OP issue...
on #3 the total sum of fuel from both bowls is not indicative of, nor a true diagnostic to revealing a low or high fuel level in *either*, individual bowl. suggest testing using gravity fed fuel source, carbs off the bike, clear tubes *visually* revealing individual heights, low or high, for each bowl independent of one another

Sounds like some type of intake restriction or carb slides not lifting correctly to me, but could be fuel-flow related also.
Were the carb diaphragms in good shape? Were the carbs clean inside? Did you remove and clean all the jets, holders, idle mixture passages, etc? Check that the slides rise and fall smoothly. Temporarily remove the air filter and see if that changes anything. |

I think your bike is fuel injected but if not, perhaps the choke lever got a little bent and is slightly closed.

Here are the plugs. They don't seem bad to me, as in running rich or lean, but at the same time I'm not an expert.

on my early 70's Triumph, I'd say they look great....but on your 250.....rich, but at least both are equally so
your air and air filter pathways are confirmed free and clear, beginning to end? choke linkage is in "OFF" position at carbs? no damage to plunger(s)? linkage or cable not allowing plungers to fully close? Examining at carb bodies while turning choke off and on up at the lever may reveal any binding. Do you remember spark plugs appearing the same (rich) in any past removals?

I am not completely sure at this point, but when I removed the spark plug wires from the plugs, I do not recall too much resistance..impact of hitting the ground might have shaken them loose resulting in poor contact? on the EX500...inside the spark plug caps is a lug...can be removed with a flathead screwdriver revealing a spring and resister inside.....
school me...is the 250 similar or possibly identical?

Yup...the snail in the intake was the issue..Funny how something this ridiculous can be so frustrating. Everything is back to normal, pulls like a dream. Thanks for the help guys.
