Ben Spies sucks at MotoGP

It just goes to show the level of competition in the world. There are so many better riders outside of the US. Even I though Ben would podium every race. Those guys are good. I would like to see Ben run the TT. Maybe when Ben gets all his sponsor stuff worked out for next year he can come back strong. Good luck Ben!

Yeh he only got on the podium once (so far) in his first year on the 800cc machine, what a loser.

First of all keep in mind this is only his first year in motogp, second of all he is on a satellite bike not a factory bike. Satellite teams have a hard time running in front compared to the factory supported bikes, they just don't get as many go fast goodies. While he is on a M-1 bike I bet you the Fiat Yamaha M-1's are faster technically speaking.

This is Ben's rookie year. Nobody will be doing this good in their rookie year. Specially against the "Aliens".

Hes doing about as well as I expected. The competition in GP is just so much stronger than in SBK. I feel like after the shuffle of riders if he picks up a fiat bike he could be much better. I think that hes a rookie isn't as much of an issue as people seem to make it. He has been riding for a long time.

Check the stats. All of the professionals have been riding a long time. He just does it better than most.

Elbowz will be on top in a matter of a few seasons - remember that some tracks are new to him and the level of competition is world-class.

Sorry for the confusion. I'm trying to say that I don't think that anyone finds his rookie status as an "issue". I think that everyone's impressed that a rookie can be so high in the standings. Usually the rookie year is sort of regarded as a throwaway because the rider "doesn't know the track" or "doesn't know the bike".

I'm curious. Does anyone know when was the last time a rookie got on the podium in MotoGP?

And then there's Ben's rookie year in WSBK...

Found it! 2008, Jorge Lorenzo and Andrea Dovizioso.

Wow! How could I forget Lorenzo? He's definitely another one that should be wearing a cape. And not to discount Dovizioso, but if Lorenzo hadn't of crashed out on the twelfth lap, Dovi probably wouldn't have gotten on the podium.

He is doing great as a rookie. Its a new bike, different tires, and a bunch of the tracks are new to him as well. He is also on a satellite bike. I'm not making excuses, but those are the facts. Also if memory serves me correctly the last person to win a race on a non-factory bike was Lorenzo in 2008.

It's not that Spies isn't good enough to ride a factory bike, its just the rules that dictate you can't ride for a factory team your rookie year (Suzuki is exempt because they don't have customer bikes). Also if things go as they are looking to go (Rossi to Ducati, Stoner to Honda), Spies will be on a factory bike next year for sure.

Lorenzo's been on a factory bike since day 1 in MotoGP, he's never been on a satellite machine. The rookie rule is brand new for this year. (silly rule!) As far as I remember, Melandri was the last satellite rider to win a race in 2006, in his first stint on the Gresini Honda.

You are right, For some reason I was thinking Lorenzo was on a satellite bike, in that case it was definitely Melandri. I thought the rookie rule was in effect last year, but I'm probably wrong on that too

The fact that it was Melandri back in 2006 further makes the point that its not easy to do, but that was also on the 990 which would be easier for most Superbike riders to adapt to (I know that is not Melandri's background, but it is Spies')
