Double bubble windscreen?
So I have a 2007 Ninja 250r. I've noticed that I could pushed around ALOT by wind on the highway, I realize most of my improvements will come from experience, but I would like a larger windscreen to tuck behind on the highway. What's the best windscreen for my ninja?

There are some other things you might want to look at too.
Mostly, your clothing. The bike isnt really affected by wind coming from the front as much as it is from the sides, and a double bubble isnt going to affect that. What you are probably experiencing is buffeting coming from your choice of clothing. Jackets have a tendancy to inflate at highway speeds from air going up the sleeves, through vents, or down the neck. When it does inflate like a balloon, it tends to oscillate constantly introducing movement into your forearms...and subsequently into the handlebars. Try managing your jacket so it reduces that inflation fluttering effect. Also your pants legs. If they are flapping in the breeze, that oscillation gets translated into the bike as well. Wearing proper fitting riding gear can make more of a difference to your perception of "wind" than a windshield or other expensive bike modification. Tighten up your clothing, and see what a difference that makes. It can make the difference between getting beat up hammered by the wind, and gliding smooth through it like a razor. |

I went for a 50 mile ride around the county yesterday. It involved lots of backroads and some freeway riding. One thing I noticed was the amount of wind impacting my riding on the freeway. I was getting blown around quite a bit. I was having to tuck in at 55mph, almost laying on my tank. Granted, The wind was gusting at about 8-11 mph.
I don't think my jacket could get any tighter in the chest, and the leather is pretty stiff on the arms. I felt the heal of my jeans flapping at about 60mph. That definitely could be contributing to the problem. I guess a Dubble would help. At what speed do you normally tuck-in? |

I have a mesh and a non-mesh textile jacket. Mesh jacket cuts through the air so much better. I swear I prob get an extra 2-3mpg with the mesh jacket. I can really feel the extra wind pressure when I wear the non-mesh jacket.
I did do 3 tanks in full tuck laying down on a tank bag with a wadded up sweatshirt inside it for comfort at 70-75mph speeds. I found it to be worth about 3-4mpg improvement at those speeds. So, 10k miles of either full tuck vs. sitting normally is a $45 difference with gas @ $4.20 a gal. Not sure it's quite worth the trouble. For bragging rights maybe, but not for any significant monetary benefit. So basically, I saved 22 cents per 50 mile daily commute by tucking in. For all the strange looks I get from passers by and the compromise in safety not being able to see in my mirrors, I don't think I'd do it for the gas savings.

Stock windscreen= wind right in my neck/face area. I am 5 10'. I actually had my windscreen off for some reason and ended up riding 2 years without it because I had a lot less issues with wind. Ive contemplated on cutting the stock one down to a level that directs the air some place other then my neck/head to cut down on the neck strain on long rides. (such as to match the cluster.. Maybe 1-2" more with nice rounded corners)
The wind isnt the problem.. Its the fact that its aerodynamically all on your head as it flows over the bike. Then buffeting just add's to it. Losing the shield cancles the buffeting and doesnt direct extra air to your head, you have w/e mph wind your riding. Thats my experance of 3 years with the shield, 2 years without and probably 500 miles worth I had the fairing off completely doing work/mods/changes.. The bikes design isnt really efficiant in the air.. and I don't believe "full tuck" is either comfortable nor the answer for the ol' ninjette. I also don't have high hopes in a larger windscreen doing much more then making the bike uglier. JMHO |
