Negotiating Tips and Stories
I'm going to look at this bike today
http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/d...545951895.html (I'm sorry it's not a Ninjette!!!!!) and I only want to pay $2k. Anyone have some tips for me? I suck at negotiating. Especially on the phone. Whenever I ask this, I also get a bunch of funny and interesting stories from people who have gotten crazy deals from just saying the right line... |

Damnnnn yoooou I've had my eye on that for a while
Anyways, that ad's been up a few months. Just got check it out and bring 2k in cash and show him that you have the money in hand, right then and there. He's lowered it from like 2900 I think, so he clearly wants to sell the damn thing already.

Best tip that I can give is money talks. Show up with the cash and tell him that's your best offer. If he hasn't gotten any other serious offers then you might get a good deal. Worst they can do is say no.
After reading that add though it seems like he's not willing to drop his price much.

^I've been wondering why it's been for sale for so long.
It's exactly what I want. Cosmetic damage but lowered with sliders. I wonder if no one else snatched it up because $2500 is WAY TOO FREAKIN HIGH for that and he won't come down, or because it's a piece of crap, or because 99% of people don't want a lowered bike or because the title isn't actually as clean as he says it is. |

Just go, talk to that demanding guy, don't show much interest, use some good time inspecting the bike and simply make him a firm offer. If he says no, still leave your contact number with him; he may call you back in a week or two. The rule of thumb is: you never know how desperate for money the other guy is. Please, read these: http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/What_do...a_used_bike%3F http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Safety_...ing_or_selling

Like others have pointed out, a lot depends on how desperate this guy wants to get rid of it and how desperate he is for cash.
I had a truck for sale on craigslist for a long time, at first I listed it high, not much interest, slowly came down over a few months and after I got to what I considered a good deal I wasn't going to budge any more no matter what. I did not have to sell the truck, I had no problem keeping it and waiting out more money because again I didn't need the money, or to get rid of the truck and I knew I would get what I wanted money wise sooner or later. My advice, don't offer less until you have seen the bike, when I was selling my truck when someone asked me to sell it for less with out even looking at it I had no desire to deal with them. Give reasons why you think it is worth less to make your argument, if you can't come up with any reasons then it is probably already priced to sell and the seller holds the cards so to speak and you either need to **** or get off the pot your offer should be. "ill give you $2k for it" NOT "will you take $2k for it?" This makes you come off as a serious buyer who is not screwing around and is willing to make that deal right now and not waste the sellers time. and never, ever ask "whats the lowest you will go?" so dumb and instant way to piss off a seller.

Got my cbr 600rr for 3500, the guy was asking 4500. I pointed out the couple of cosmetic issues + needing new tires, told the dude 3500 was the most I'd pay. Naturally he said no, but I told him my offer stands; 2 weeks later he texted me and said he'd take it

Yup, you've gotten good advice here already. If you're ready to take it away (truck, trailer, etc), take $2k and make him the cash offer. Be polite, but straightforward. If he counters, don't think about it or act like you're negotiating. Say, politely, that $2k is what you are willing to pay, and if he agrees, then he can sell it today. If he says no, then don't stick around or ask any questions: offer a handshake, give him something with your name and number on it, and say that he's welcome to call you if he changes his mind.
Good luck! |

go look at the bike without saying anything about the quality. you can ask questions, and it's best to giggle sarcastically at every response as if the owner doesn't know what they're talking about or is obviously lying (they will likely be lying anyway) once you have finished looking over the bike (don't ask the owner the quality of things, just ask facts... ie- when was this done, when was that done... remember giggle as if the owner is lying.) then make your offer. start 500 down. you want to pay 2k so make an offer of "1500 in it's current condition". they will say no and question why its so low and almost get offended. don't explain your offer "i'm not here to tell you whats wrong im here to make an offer on this bike". don't explain what condition you think the bike is in. the less the owner knows about what you know the better. do not justify yourself. you have made an offer, the owner can either accept it, reject it, or make a counter offer. he will say "no i want 4000". just giggle, and say 'well i can come up a little bit for you since you're such a funny guy. my top number is 2000" at this point they will feel pretty ****** about the bike and will either sell it to you or they are the person who will hold out for months until they find a noob who doesn't know what they're doing that will spend 5k on it.

Negotiating Tips and Stories
i usually leave 20% if the service is good but sometimes i leave more...
for example at this biker bar i go to, a beer is $3...i give the bartender $5, gives me a $2 change, i give him a $1 tip...i won't give him a $2 tip just for a bottle of beer...so he gives me the beer and all he does is twist off the cap...hell no...!!! |

Wheres the picture of the receipt with the total equaling like 17.32 and the tip line has the word "Math" written on it, and the total is $20. I've done that a few times.
I lol'd at the elephant joke... that was a good one. As for the bike, show him your total cash for the price you're willing to pay. Act like clint eastwood for the entire interaction. Here's an idea of the performance you are going for.. Your homework for tonight is watching 'gran torino'. And various other clint eastwood movies, preferably the ones he directed and acted in.

So...a guy and his girl are walking by the circumcision clinic.
The doctor upstairs does the cut and tosses the skin out the window. It lands on girls shoulder. Girls says to boyfriend, Hey...what's this ? Boyfriend says, bite it, if you like the way it tastes, I'll give you the rest. |
