People who hike on the AT receive trail names. For one, they're easier to remember than real names. Two, it keeps gender anonymous in most cases. Three, why the hell not?
My trail name is Clarity. Not only does that sum up the reason for my hike in one simple, concise word, but it sounds pretty.

So next Saturday I'm going on a hike with an overnight camp out in one of the AT shelters. The HIGH that day is 32. I'm getting initiated to hardships on the trail really fuggin' quick. Funny though, I can't wait!

This weekend is kind of like my initiation to the harshness that can be experienced on the AT. I'm doing an overnight in the Smokey Mountains with freezing rain and snow with below-freezing temperatures both days. It's a hike with a few friends, so I won't be alone. It'll be fun to challenge myself. Can I make it and still enjoy hiking in such miserable conditions? We shall see...

Just read through all of this thread...I'm so jealous right now. Being a 14 year veteran of Boy Scouts I was only able to do one big backpacking trip at Philmont for a week....oh well I'm only 23 and I have lots of time left.
Hiking the AT or the PCT has been a dream of mine, I don't really want to go from end to end, but by sections works. I have taken many smaller hikes and long canoe trips, many of which I'll never forget. I although am terrible with packing WAY too much. Hell, I went from my backcountry cabin in Philmont, NM at 7000ft over a 12000ft mountain, down to 5000ft in 12 miles in less than 5 hours, all while being chased by a lightning storm and wearing a 65lb pack full of laundry and camera gear. The last 2000ft dropped in less than half a mile, yeehaa! So yeah I can't wait to get a real job (recently graduated) and do a similar trip to what you are planning Ally. Keep up the great work and keep us updated. BTW this weekend was super mega cold with all that ice...stay warm! |

Learn to love the beans!!!! They transport and store well and will keep ya entertained later.
Super easy to make because the less you do to them the better. Really easy to make on the trial because it's light and dry until made. This is cottage ham, white beans, water and salt. Tastes great and will keep ya going. The biggest problem is they take a while to make, so best start these while you sleep overnight. Tip: Crack some of the bean casings off before cooking so they break down and create a thick broth. You also might enjoy the turbo boost while going up the hill from you human exhaust vent.

honestly the best meals i've ever had looked like they were made mostly of cow ****. i had these fried octopus balls one time. they looked like a -5 out of 10 on the appealing scale. but they were a 15 out of 10 on the delicious scale.

Anyone gonna be riding the twisties near Amicalola Falls next weekend? If so, you should stop by for the AT kick-off party! I'm pretty excited about attending and camping a couple of nights. If it weren't for having to finish out the school year, I'd be hitting the trial next weekend, but instead, I'm gonna party with others who are.

I updated my trail journal after my first experience solo hiking and camping up a mountain with a 30-pound pack on my back. Yes. Bring on June!!
I've got several other hikes with a few multi-day adventures planned before the big trip starting on June 6. Holy hell, it's close! Trail journal address: www.trailjournal.com/twistwrist

I'd probly "camp" in a rv or cabin, but my days of cots, truck hoods, in a hole, on the ground... That crap is over!
It sure is nicer to go to a bathroom that to dig a hole and squat! Regular showers I love! All this clean off with baby wipes or pour water on your head would only be good if I had a waterfall and minions... Sexy sexy minions

Spent last night on top of a mountain in a tent with a hiking buddy and my dog. The temps were in the teens.
Well, I survived it and actually enjoyed it! Go figure. Next week over Spring Break, I'll be out hiking for 4 nights! It'll be my longest adventure in the woods yet.

My down sleeping quilt is rated for 20 degrees. In cold weather, I also take a "travel sack" rated for 55 and snuggle into both. Plus I dress in layers, wear a hat and gloves to bed, and having a dog and a friend provided enough body heat to,well, not sleep peacefully, but I had enough heat to at least lay there awake for 7 hours. No sleep, but I listened to owls all night and thought a lot. Tired today, but worth it.
