Unhappy Blown Fork Seal

Hey guys and gals,

I have recently blown my fork seal on my right fork. My local shop said it would be about $200 to fix.... The seal itself is only $15... Does anyone have any advice or links to help me fix it myself??

Thanks for any help,
Dalton

Def what Motofool suggests. Plenty of knowledge around here and DIY info for the mechanically inclined or those willing to learn the mechanics to complete.

How many miles on bike? Maybe consider overhauling the front suspension and getting a rebuild kit for both? Change fork oil? If one seal blew after X amount of miles, could only be a matter of time before the next could go. Hit any outrageous bumps lately? Go airborne? Only ask as there could be other damage/issues that need attention.

A vacationing penguin is driving his through Arizona when he notices that the oil pressure light is on. He gets out to look and sees oil dripping out of the motor. He drives to the nearest town and stops at the first gas station.

After dropping the car off, the penguin goes for a walk around town. He sees an ice-cream shop and, being a penguin in Arizona, decides that something cold would really hit the spot. He gets a big dish of ice cream and sits down to eat. Having no hands he makes a real mess trying to eat with his flippers. After finishing his ice cream, he goes back to the gas station and asks the mechanic if he's found the problem. The mechanic looks up and says "It looks like you blew a seal."

"No no," the penguin replies, "it's just ice cream."

The how-to threads here are awesome. I'd just follow one of those.

The following video has nothing to do with the matter, but does relate to the later discussion.

I needed a set of Impact Allen sockets from Harbor Freight to get the bottom screw out only because it was hard to get leverage with anything with a long enough end to it.

I also remember removing that screw too early in the process and having to try to re-build things to get it to work, and swearing a lot. So make sure you follow the steps in the manual!

Me too. Also used their 12v Emergency Impact Wrench because I am cheap. It has come in handy for bar ends and countershaft sprockets too.
