Hit a patch of gravel, lowsided.
That's pretty much it. I know the road and know that gravel is there but I also know the lines to avoid it. However, I was distracted by the dog for long enough to look away from the road and subsequently **** up my line. I was going somewhere between 35-55mph in 2nd gear but don't know the exact speed. Luckily I'm fine other than a few scrapes and bruises due to my jacket holding up (It's somehow still usable! Speed&Strength did a good job making it) and my helmet taking one for the team. My gloves are all kind of scraped up and I'm probably going to need to replace those too, going with some gauntlet gloves this time. I have a few scratches from where the jacket rubbed since it's a size or two big though, but that's the extent of my injuries afaik, going to patient first tomorrow to ensure that my shoulder is good. I wasn't wearing pants or boots since I was headed to work but amazingly have no damage to my lower body other than a few scratches on my knee.
The convenient thing was that the whole thing happened right in front of a paramedic who was in her front lawn on her day off. She patched me up and sent me on my way, I got home and switched to my car and showed up on time to work like nothing happened. Pics (disclaimer, I'm not entirely sure how to resize these so they're a bit large): The Bike, all of the damage is cosmetic: Gloves: Helmet, visor broke off and there are a bunch of gashes above it as well as a crack going down separating the outer layer chinbar from the back right below the visor clip: Gravel & the marks left on the road by my bike: Loud ass dog: Summary, I knew the road and that there is gravel in that corner but was distracted when the time came to avoid said gravel, plowed right through it lifted the rear off the ground and had a bad time. BUT I'M GOOD AND THE BIKE IS GOOD! She just lost a bit of her shine |

I'm actually not that bummed about it, yea it sucks but I was fairly lucky with the lack of damage/injury. Yea my gear got all kinds of ****ed up but that's what gear is meant for.
I also have no intention of ever selling the bike so I'm not really worried about the loss of value either. |

Sucks man. Glad you're ok and the damage to the bike is minor. One of the reasons I'm not riding a whole lot yet, still tons of sand around from the winter.

Just ordered my new helmet, Should be back on the bike this week once it comes in.
http://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/i...avenous-helmet Unfortunately the matte black chantilly helmet was already sold out but being from B'more this'll work fine. I already know the fit is perfect for my head with these helmets so that's not an issue. |

I may still involve them on monday. Their offices are closed today, and I have the argument that I went to work half an hour later so I didn't have the opportunity to call about it. The way I see it, I involve insurance and get it all fixed for a slightly higher premium or I wait it out a bit and live with it until July/August swap the fairings and make it look badass. |

^ A solid argument, especially considering how my scorpion helmet cost more than fixing the total damage to the bike.
Shame I'm not covered for track days like I thought I was, state farm changed their policy at some point. |

track days? or races?
they typically don't cover a competition or anything that is timed. but crashing your bike while using it for what it was meant for should be covered by insurance. besides, how do they know you didn't crash like that in your front drive way? that's where the bike is laying when the inspector comes.

Honestly I don't know how they would, I know racing/timed stuff isn't covered but I read the update as anything on a road used for racing/competition. I specifically asked my rep if a riding school was covered and he said no.

so if you were to crash in long beach on that road (that is normally a perfectly legal public street road) they use to race on sometimes, you would not be covered?
sounds like you should switch to progressive

I feel sorry for that beautiful Ninja 300 and for your bad experience.
Which tire yielded? Were you going too fast? Other than paying more attention to the surface, what would you do different in similar situations to avoid a low-side fall?

I was going 35-50mph, I don't know the exact speed but I was in 2nd gear and the bike wasn't leaned very far over so I think it was closer to 35 than 50. The road is a 30mph zone but that corner has a suggested limit sign of 15mph. I don't believe that speed was the problem, just that speed made it worse when I lost the rear. I had just started my throttle roll on. In terms of speed/awareness I was going too fast because I was distracted, though I naturally slowed a bit when I was distracted. Well, keeping myself from being distracted would help. I ride through a lot of roads with patches of gravel similar to this case and there is usually a line that you can take where you don't run into any problems but because I was distracted I took a standard outside-inside line and crossed right over the gravel patch. Usually when I spot gravel I slow down, look for a safe path and continue slowing down until I find said path. A outside entrance-outside apex-outside exit or A inside entrance/apex/exit line would have been safe in this case. As I've stated before though, I'm not terribly bummed about it because I consider myself relatively lucky due to my lack of injuries and the relative lack of damage to the bike. It is unfortunate but there are bright sides to it in the long term. Mainly the fact that I get to make my own graffiti paint scheme on the fairing set when I find a replacement fairing on ebay/craigslist. |

It looks like you slid across the other lane... Lucky that no cars were coming. You fcked that pavement up good though! If I were you I wouldn't get insurance involved. If the bike's still rideable and you can afford some new gear and some fairings later on, it's probably worth it to keep your rates low and keep yourself on that policy

I did indeed slide into the other lane, It's a road just far enough out of the way to the point where a car coming the other way would have been a surprise. Usually the only people on the road are people that live there. I'm looking into getting a higher paying job in the near future anyway and with the damage being minimal at worst It should look good as new this summer/fall.

True, however I don't want to risk totaling it at the track, it's both more reliable than my car and worth a lot more money than my car. If insurance doesn't cover it in the event it's totaled then I'm pretty screwed over. I'd rather risk my 250 that's pretty much worth nothing in terms of finances. Quote:

Sucks to hear about the bike. in this case, I wouldn't even take it to the insurance company, your deductible might be more than it is to even fix the bike yourself. Plus it's kinda fun to fix it yourself as long as it's nothing too major, like frame damage.
BTW, AAA is great insurance and covers track days!!!! I tested this with my R6 in october. the only thing they don't cover is timed events or racing. a track day is neither, they just ask for proof that you were at the event(receipt) and that's about it. |

Good to hear that everything ended up working out for you. That's a relatively minor crash, Lucky that you're not hurt at all. People have broken bones in less serious crashes.
I know i'll pay more attention to gravel from now on though. |

I would suggest Progressive. They are really great for motorcycle insurance and for me it was only a 20 or 40 dollar difference.
When that car hit me they didn't miss a beet and I had a check in a week. Even helped me with theach doctor office. And they just cut the shop a check for the damage from the 300 falling the other day. Between that and the awesome customer service they are worth every penny.
