Starting ?
I know this is a 250 forum. And I find myself trying to get a 500 ready to commute with. She has been giving me so trouble. Hope someone here come offer some advice. She only starts only when she wants to, also so far it has been the first attempt. Turn the key on give it some choke, hit the button and she jumps to attention. If she doesn't start walk away there is no pattern. Hot, cold, 5 minutes or 5 hours apart. Just had the carbs done (nice job ducatiman) Valves have been checked. Runs great, when it starts, you would never know there is a problem. Any help would be great. Thanks in advance.

Does it turn over?
If it doesn't turn over I would look for a poor earth to start with. What have you pulled apart lately, check all your connections. I had a faulty relay (electrical thingie) once, it was a bitch to diagnose. |

As noted - check all connections and grounds.
Check battery voltage before cranking (12.7V or more) and as you hit the button (10V or more) to confirm the battery is good. Also check out www.ex-500.com for more 500-specific info. The starter solenoid/relay on the 500 can be an issue, so search for some troubleshooting info on that as well. |

So you're saying your bike only starts when light reflects off Venus through some swamp gas and shines on your bike?
Then it must be simply the start button.

Cranks very well,
I like this, Exacting "bike only starts when light reflects off Venus through some swamp gas and shines on your bike" Will be checking switch and sol tonight. It has to be something simple. It runs like a champ when it starts. |

Is that correct? it takes 4 things to make a bike run, Air, Fuel, Spark, and Compression. I think we can rule out compression (although you might be having a valve sticking I would think the other cylinder would pop a bit). I think we can rule out air. So either your bike isn't getting fuel or it isn't getting spark. I'd look at spark first. Carry a spare spark plug, next time your bike doesn't start unplug a plug wire put it on your spare spark plug, ground the plug to your engine and hit the starter button. I'm betting you won't have spark. Now start looking for electrical problems that lead to spark. My son's Harley had similar problem, ended up being a broken wire on the input to the coil. |

If you’ve not done as yet confirm valve clearances are ok
It is suggested using .006 intake and .009 exhaust Get the bike running, warm and set the pilot screws, when I did the carbs I set at the accepted starting position of 2 1/2 turns from lightly seated. Any 500 I’ve done here reacts well to carbs and valves, push button instant start Good luck with it, Bbug

Got to play with it last night. 9 out of 10 times I hit the starter button she fired right up. There has to be an electrical gremlin some where. Checked the connections and cleaned what I could so now i'm hoping to get 10 out 10 starts tonight. Yes I did check the valves while on the lift.
ducatiman You have them set at 2 1/2 ? I reason I ask is you have 3 turns written on the bar hold the carbs together. And she seems to run well. |

Either way , just an initial setup position, still suggest setting pilots , bike hot, for highest idle speed . Each side sweet spot may vary, don’t be surprised. Setting them correctly, you should be 10/10.

I do not know what happened. Went out the other day hit the starter and she jumped to attention. Put maybe 5 miles on her in the area. And she has started every single time since. Still cleaned out the switches and check all the connectors I could find. But Thank you to all who pitched in.
