Could that be an extreme case of target fixation?

No... Why? A highside is an example of a throttle control error.
Short story; While coaching at the track a friend crashed the session before mine and dropped gas at the apex of the corner. Of course the track put quick dry on it and swept it but it was still sketchy through the area and I should have altered my line. I was coaching the novice group and assigned 3 riders to lead. I alerted my group to alter their line to avoid the area until further notice and they did. However... I was focused on my group and forgot to alter my line. I rode straight through the quick dry on the track with my group behind me doing exactly what I asked them to do, ride offline. My group avoided the area but they got to watch me ride straight through the sketchy area and the rear end slide waaaaayyyyyy out. I continued my throttle roll just like nothing ever happened and when the rear hooked back up, the bike continued on its way like nothing ever happened. It was a great example and learning experience for my group and proof that good throttle control will save your arse from many crashes. Ask yourself, is a bike totally out of control with the rear sliding? If you think so... watch some of the ICON drift and flat track videos on youtube. Too bad for these riders, they both must have made the same throttle control error at near the same time. Even if the crash was inevitable, staying in the throttle and low siding is a better option. Now... target fixation could have a been a factor for the chasing rider. When the first rider was crashing, it could have contributed to the 2nd rider's throttle control. A controlled and smooth roll off can save you from a high side if it's not already too far gone. You will have to make the call yourself if you have the time to save it or take the lowside as nothing is 100% for sure.

Well,
I tried to be funny, but it is a good example of how you can fail at it over the internet, event more, when your first language is not English... I guess I could have tied to be more ironic or sarcastic, that way it would have be obvious I was playing the humorous card... Sorry about that one. |

Well Cotton, I think I will have to give them an 8.5 for this one, the second rider was a little out of sync and didn't hold the bars long enough on this one. They should make the finals, but will have to come up with a more elaborate scheme.

That curbing must have hurt. They both exit the track at nearly the same spot but both slides started from different spots.
