Pitbull stands

Well I was *this* close to cheaping out and buying a pair of stands for about $100... but after realizing that I want to buy 1 stand and that's it for my entire life opposed to 5. I think I may go with the pitbull.

Some questions first though,

I can only afford the rear stand, so later on when I do buy a front stand, does it have to be pitbull or can I use some other brand?

Also, does the removable extended arm seem like it's worth the extra $15?

lol, what kind of stands did you get? I mean, I guess I don't "need" pitbull stands, it's not like the 300 weighs a ton.

We have 2 harbor freight stands and have no complaints.

I've read some horror stories with cheaper HarborFreight type stands, welds breaking and bike hits the ground scenarios. I bought a cheap HarborFrieght rear stand for my 14, and it is a bit sketchy for a 500+ pound bike. Wobbly side to side movement, so I quit using it for winter storage and it's just a now and then stand for maintenance/repairs.
I have MotoStance stands and they were about $150 for the set, far better built than the cheapies. Heavier gauge tubing, the upward cross strut is welded in at a higher point so it's far sturdier too, plus they are powder coated vs paint.
I still want PitBull pin mount front stands for fork/front wheel services, but the MotoStance stands work great for the cost.

I bought a set of T-Rex stands in 2006 and they still work great.

Yeah, I am glad I just went with the pitbull. I learned from my previous experiences (like buying gear) that it is better to just pay extra and get something that is good and will last (I regret buying my helmet everyday... :/)

Read an interesting article in RoadracingWorld this week. The guy that founded PitBull used to work for NASA. Did it as a side gig, before it took off enough for it to become his main gig. Right on his team at NASA, was another guy with a motorcycle hobby. He was looking for a better way to stand up his bike at the racetrack, and redesigned a chock that a local trailer company was using. It became the Baxley chock, pretty much the most popular type for that tool. He also left NASA once it started to take off.

So if you're buying Pitbull stand or a Baxley chock, you're buying it from people who designed things to function in space. I think they can be trusted to hold up a motorcycle.

I can build a dirt cheap stand that will hold a bike up where there's no gravity.


I too have a set of ~$100 generic stands. I only use them for occasional work on the 500. I'm not using them constantly or on huge bikes, so I don't need them to be able to hold up a space shuttle for a decade. For me, paying three times as much wasn't worth it, though I'm sure the Pitbulls are better. While I'm all for not cheaping out on things, that also doesn't necessarily mean buying the most expensive option either. Sometimes there's a middle ground that meets your needs while still saving some money.

I have a couple pit bull stands and love them. I also have a couple stands I got back in the 80s that still work perfect.

A Venom stand bent and dropped my bike once. Once was enough. Got a pitbull after that and never had a problem since then.

I paid $50 for a set of stands, idk the brand but they're not pitt bull. but I know they held up a zx14 for 3 months before I got them so I have full faith. haven't used them at all since I have the lift at work

don't buy pitt bull stands. IMO, buy cheap ones and use the extra money on something cooler. or more gas.

I love riding motorcycles, I know this isn't just a "phase" that i'll grow out of. It's a true passion. So if i'm presented with the opportunity to spend extra $$ for the best stands around that I will NEVER need to replace, then i'm going to do it.

3 months after buying my gear I said "I should of spent about ~$200 on my helmet, got something light and better build quality, I should of spent a little extra on my jacket and got something a little more comfortable and not black, I should of spent more money and got comfortable riding pants instead of the crap ones I got for $60 (which I end up never using anyway, since they're so bad)".

I know in 3 months, hell, in 3 YEARS I'll look back on my decision with the pitbull stand and say to myself "I'm so glad I bought this over the cheap $#it.

I mean, just to play devil's advocate; I've had a cheapie HF stand for 3 years and it's been fine. That bitch only cost me about $23 I think.

Also, I kinda fall in and out of love with the motorcycle. I think of it as just a toy, and all toys kinda get shifted around once in a while with me. Motorcycling will always be there for me, but maybe not always the same style of motorcycle.

Yeah, who knows. I've been interested in bikes for about 2 years now, mainly sport bikes. I enjoyed the way they looked. Then one day while browsing the internet I noticed someone was going on and on about how ninja 250's are great bikes, when I saw the newgen I thought it looked perfect. It looked cool and was a great learner's bike? Sign me up! I couldn't afford the newgen so I went and got a pregen, I figured i'd learn. And 5 months and 4k miles, I'm on a 300 and still loving it every day.

So I guess you can say, I've been riding for a very small amount of time, maybe it is still new to me *shrugs*

I considered used, but buying brand new would of only cost me an extra $40 and I get the removeable extended handle, which will help me get more leverage, plus I get the satisfaction of knowing it's new. Always nice to open up new things

I've got a Vortex rear, and a Black Widow front stand. I like them both, they have held up since 2008 with no issues. The reason I went with the Black Widow for the front is that it comes with 5 or 6 different size pins so it works with pretty much all bikes. The three bikes I have now all have different triple tee holes, so I'm glad I did.

oh and rule number one... Never, NEVER put the bike on just the front stand...

you can have it on just the rear... but on just the front.. it's new plastics and mirror time

The money you save with cheap stands will go away after one drop. I've had cheap stands before and while they never failed me they always felt unstable. I have no issues with sitting or working on the bike while it is on the pitbull stands.

I've left mine on the front stand, but never for long periods. It holds it up just fine. To be clear, I use a front stand that supports the bike at the triple tee, not at the forks.

I won't even have a front stand for a while now... unfortunately.

Also I just checked ebay and say a used pitbull stand go for $80 shipped *shoots self in head* lol.

Oh well, These will be my stands for a very long time. I still don't regret my decision.

Also they will be arriving tomorrow!

That's why the cheap stands are cheap: They are either really light or not one piece and are easier to ship. Pit bulls are all one big piece (aside from the obvious), so they don't break down to fit in small boxes. I've seen pit bull stands that were ran over by trucks and trailers that didn't bend.

I just got done using my pitbull stand and it is great! Glad I went with it! I regret buying the extended removeable arm for an extra $30. I mean, it's nice but highly unnecessary.

Overall i'm happy, my pitbull spools work perfectly too! Getting the bike up and back down was easy, just remember to use a block of wood under the kickstand and you're all set. I shook the bike a little bit to test the sturdiness of the stand and these things are rock solid.

My verdict, you love your bike? Spend an extra $50 on a quality rear stand.

My brother handed down a "cheapo" stand that he's used on all his bikes since he was 16. That was 14 years ago. No complaints from either of us, and I'm still rocking it all the time *knock on wood*

You'll want the removable handle the first time you trip over a fixed one.

i am looking for a front stand (tripple something or other) to be able to work on the fron forks ...

but yeah they look great too

In time, you will be able to pop the bike on and off the stand without assistance of any type. So the block of wood is just a temp/ease of use thing. We do it at the track all the time without a side stand at all, like it's old hat.

Either way... cool you're good with a rear stand.

I would buy a pitbull stand now, they go for about $100 shipped on ebay all the time. Just get one man, save up. Don't eat lunch for a couple weeks. Whatever it takes. I wouldn't put a 50cc pocket bike on that cheap stand you're using. lol
