New guy from Orange County

Hey all! I'm new to the motorcycle world and am looking seriously at a 250R. A friend of a friend is selling a 2008 with 900 miles (!) and wants $3,500 for it. He said he's started it periodically and left it on a trickle charger. He has multiple bikes and intended this one for his gf who never really got into it. He said he'll clean out the carb and get it ready to go before he sells it to me. Any thoughts? Am I looking for trouble with a bike that has sat for so long?

Welcome to the site, JC !!!

The price seems high.

Consider replacing both tires due to age.

I'm going to check it out tonight as long as schedules align and I'll be sure to check out the tires.

The price seems high to me as well but KBB says it's only worth $2,500. I looked around craigslist and I don't see anything in that territory. I was thinking $3k would be a good price. The sitting has me worried but at least it's not an unknown selling so it shouldn't have any surprises. Thanks for the input.

For your reference, I got my 2010 250 SE with 1k miles on it for $3,500. I do think I paid more than market value, but I was tired of waiting and checking on CL everyday, and I liked the color. I just wanted to start riding . I think ~$3k is about right for a 2008 with low miles.

Nothing wrong with checking it out but I got my Black 2011 Ninja for $2850 with 4k miles. I would deffiently just throw down the 3k or $3,500 on a down payment for a brand new ninja 300 and get super cheap monthly payments if you couldnt just pay the $5,500 upfront! Those 300s are super nice bikes, fuel injection, and you know not a single thing is wrong with it plus a warranty!
Can't really beat that for the money and how superb the bike is!

Sounds like a good deal to me. That 08 model is pretty new with only 900miles but then again it is an 08 which retailed msrp for 3499 anyways. I'd say around 3200 maybe

I'm Alex.S. Your friend's friend is wanting to sell you a bike that's basically been sitting around for 5 years for the same msrp as when he bought it. For comparison, my local shop has 2012's that are brand new and they're asking for the same price (before dealer fees and taxes and stuff, but still).

I ended up buying it. He drained all the gas and rebuilt the carb before he sold it to me. It runs like a top. It's got a few mods on it too which I like so overall I'm happy.

At the end if you're happy with it then it's a good purchase. Congrats on the new bike!

Like Hernan posted before, consider getting new tires. Even though they may look okay if they're 5 years old you really should change them out.

I agree, I bought a 2005 that "only sat for a year" and Im still working the kinks out. It did only cost me $700 though.

He's your friend, talk him down a bit, he isn't losing anything if he has multiple bikes.

He may be gaining a friend to ride with...I'd pay money for that!

Where in OC?

Am I too late? Damn, oh no, you bought his g/f's bike. That means it's a girl's bike. Please don't read thread about being laughed at on a 250.

A real man's bike is the 300 with fuel injection. But that's water under the bridge.

If you have never ridden before, make sure to read all the threads and posts on this site and you'll be fine.

Hey I appreciate the advice even if it's a little late. The bike has 3,400 miles on it now and has been completely trouble free. I'm in Irvine.

I don't really care what people think. That being said I have a 2013 Triumph Street Triple R and I'm keeping the 250 around for my gf to ride. The Ninja is just a little small for me but I still like it. I get more thumbs up on the Ninja than the STR too.

OK, I guess I read it wrong the first time. You're new.

OK, I guess I got it wrong the second time. You have a man's bike and the 250 is for the g/f (coz it's a girl's bike).

OK, I guess I got it wrong the third time. You get a thumbs up when you're on your g/f's bike (probably a wave on the Triumph) and it's too small for you.

Anyways, with all the kidding aside.

The Ninja was my first bike. I have in the intervening months since I started this thread and bought the Ninja also purchased the Triumph. My gf has now "claimed" the Ninja as hers. Random people seem to prefer the Ninja to my Triumph. Which in fairness the Triumph is a strange looking bike.
