had to happen bhbgSOB!

Bone Headed Front Brake Grabing SOB.

So I was a out practicing and not been on a bike for 2 weeks after passing my msf. Everything seemed fine the first 20 minutes of joy riding in my hood.
So I decide to go around the neighborhood counterclockwise, felt pretty secure then I gragged too much throtle while performing a basic left turn, I freaked out, did not roll out of the throtle but grabbed the front brake and low sided while on the throtle. I had my helmet on gloves jeans and long shirt. Twisted my knee ankle and wrist, walked it off fine though. Just a slight knee scrape as evidence is left today.

The bike got a tiny scrape on the left fairing, mirror and bar end and that was it. Seems I freak out with throtle and forget to roll off in these moments- it feels as though the throttle is stuck but I know this cant be and its me!

Note to self- relax and practice friggen throttle rolls!

Good thing you're okay... and could walk it off. Get some proper riding gear...

Take it easy. Be safe.

Something you may want to practice is getting on the clutch. If your throttle control is not all that great instead of jerking on and off you can just grab a handful of clutch and get it back under control.

Yeah, but when I first learned to drive a car that was what my dad told me, if things got out of control stab the clutch and hit the brakes, and I never got in the habit of going for the clutch, just a good thing to do if you need to bail out of a set of problems like that while you are learning.

once i was comfortable enough to get on the road, i planned out the simplest/straightest route possible to a highschool quite a ways away so i could use their stadium parking lot to practice.

Should do the same. no cars, parking lot lights everywhere to plan out in ur head what you want to do, speed bumps so you can get used to that aswell.

A car is not a motorcycle. If you're turning and you hit the clutch all of a sudden.. what then? you're trying to turn a motorcycle and you can't transfer the weight to your rear wheel. What if you're too fast? And what if he needs to get on throttle and with panic, he lets go of the clutch too fast..

Like I said. It's not a good technique or idea on a motorcycle.

Believe me I've shifted to neutral by accident a couple times while i was going in a turn. It's not pretty.

The clutch is always your friend, in any vehicle.

Thanks for all the feedback. Msf course was great I still need more seat time. I have take that turn several times no problem since that time and all is good. I still need more. Throttle and clutch practice for sure. I since also adjusted tire pressures they both were at 20 psi and now have 28 rear 32 front.duh .

Rule of thumb for any turn: Enter slow, leave fast.
It is safer acquiring your sense of entry speed from the slow side.
You need to give yourself time and space, in a way that you keep your survival reactions from appearing in the wrong moment.

Copied from the MSF basic course's handbook:

"To stop, the hands and feet work together in a coordinated and smooth fashion.
Squeeze the clutch and the front brake lever while pressing on the rear brake pedal and downshifting to first gear.
The front brake provides 70% or more of the stopping power for your motorcycle.

It’s important to remember when stopping in a curve that the amount of traction available for braking is reduced.
This is because a portion of the total available traction is being used for turning, leaving less traction for braking.
The key to stopping quickly in a curve is to get the motorcycle straight up as soon
as possible so that the maximum amount of traction is available for braking.

If road and traffic conditions permit, straighten the motorcycle first and “square” the
handlebar (center the steering) before the brakes are applied for a maximum-
braking, straight-line stop.

There may be conditions that do not allow straightening first, such as running off the road in a left-hand curve or dealing with oncoming traffic in a right-hand curve.
In such situations, apply the brakes smoothly and gradually.
As the lean angle is reduced, more brake pressure can be applied.
It is best at the end of a stop to have the motorcycle straight up.
This is the reason to “square” the handlebars near the end of the stop."

Yes. Which is why he won't be going into turns super hot like that. It's a non issue. He's learning the basics, not the advanced bits, and when you are learning the basics, the clutch is a good "oh ****" escape.

I just went through MSF, and they're constantly telling you to cover the clutch or to hit it if you feel you're going too fast, or something goes wrong...

Only reason I cover clutch (not always) is to shorten the time I reach the clutch..

I'm personally trying to forget a lot of stuff they taught me in MSF. lol.

But anyway. Seems like people here have it all figured it up. Best of luck!
