Earrings...

Hey all, i have had the worst luck with my earrings!

I have 3 in one ear and 4 i the other. I had the small hinged hoops you can get at hot topic. Then i noticed i started loosing them from them poping when i took my helmet off.

So i went and got ones like these:

Now i lost the spikes on the ends of 2 of them.... And they catch mot then the solid hoop did (that can hurt).

So for those of you that wear earrings like that.. What do you wear???

I just want to find a small hoop that won't fall apart on me when i take my helmet off. I'm going to try switching out the spikes for the little balls and see if that works too...

I took mine out for good about six months ago - but I used to have same style with balls on the end, and I never had any problems with them for multiple years.

Mine are the same as yours except I have ball ends. I wear my 10g rings through 6g tunnels, so the rings actually move freely. I don't know if that'd make any difference.

I wear captive bead hoops. They've never pulled off or gotten caught, since the whole circle is closed, and everything is rounded.

Wear nitrile gloves to pop the beads in or use pliers.

I have 4 in one ear, including a top piercing; and 3 in the other. I've had good luck with the horseshoes with beads. I've also noticed I get a lot less earrings caught in my Shoei helmet than I did my old HJC.

I was trying to switch out the spikes for the balls and 3 of them stripped! That's what I get for getting to 18g. Normally get 16 for those.

Awesome! I started wearing nitrile gloves for any wrenching to keep my hands clean and get better leverage on metal parts after I started hanging with a couple of crazy Volvo guys who did it.

I had 2 in each ear plus a cartilage and the only one I ever wear is the cartilage. I hate the regular ones, they don't look good on me and they annoy the **** out of me anytime I wear them. Also, different helmets accommodate your ears differently. I couldn't wear my Scorpion helmet because of my cartilage piercing so I just crashed with it so I could get a new one.

Ouch... just the thought of that makes me cringe... thank god I've never had that problem.

I wonder if that's ever actually happened...

I bet it has happened, and it definitely sucked for who it happened to too

I assume a standard stud earring has no issues with helmets, since I've been considering getting one for ages

Not sure.
As long as you aren't getting big, bulky ones it probably would be ok. The only problem I see is of the helmet pushed the back of it into your neck. That may be uncomfortable.

I wear a standard earring. Diamond stud, 18k gold. Just one, in my left ear.

I take it out for track days and bicycle rides, but I usually wear it for moto rides. Helmet on, helmet off. No problems so far.

I almost lost an ear the first time I tried to wear my lid with earrings in. My helmet is not real tight either.

@choneofakind that's pretty much exactly what I'm going for except my birthstone (amethyst) instead of diamond, left ear ofc (I'm 99% sure that left is right and right is gay, never understood that stereotype though to differentiate based on which ear is pierced)

I was going to recommend this, they even have captive bead rings where the bead is perm attached to one side of the ring. Get them made out of something soft like 18k or Tantalum. Twist sideways (not open) to install. It's all one piece, nothing to lose.

the alternative... is to wear your jewelry in a location where helmet donning and removal is not an issue

Yeah, idk. Both my helmets fit snugly and correctly, neither has pulled it out so far. I'm not going to question it!

I don't get the difference either, but regardless, I only wanted one and only got one in the left ear. Protip: when looking for single earrings, you can get nicer stuff for less money than the comparable pair at a jeweler who sells estate jewelry. A lot of times, earrings get separated and aren't worth much as singles. I have a little diamond, good quality, 18k gold. Put a new back on it when I bought it, and the whole thing was like $90. It's an old cut though, so it shines a little different than a modern cut diamond. Jeweler said even as an estate piece, if it had a partner, it would have been sold for $300.

It goes back to the days when it was far from acceptable to be gay. It was a way to indicate whether or not you were gay, straight, or bi. And let's not even get into the elaborate hanky code...

^ solid answer, I grew up while it was becoming acceptable to the point where it was almost as if it was a fashion statement for gays to come out of the closet

Try stuff from Neometal; they're flat-back studs with an end that don't require screwing. Tons of options for ends too.

Like eternalnewb mentioned, CBRs are good too. The trick for me was to set it at the point where the ball came in and out easily but still had a good amount of tension so the ball won't pop out. I went and got ring opening and closing pliers just for that actually.

I mostly just wear glass plugs/retainers in all my piercings and don't have a problem unless I rip off my helmet too rough. I don't even have a problem wearing a glass retainer in my one helix piercing without an o-ring.

Personally, stopped wearing earrings while riding.
However, I wonder if some stretchy, thin stocking cap that covers ears could work to keep earrings from catching on helmet? swim cap? balaclava?
I shave my head, so hair isn't an issue.
Guess I'll try my own advice and put the gold hoops back in!
Liked the image of the pointy part hoops.

I have double studs in my lobes. I use the backings that came with the earrings when they were pierced so they cling tighter than others. Case and point, the one time I used other ones, I ripped them out and lost 2 in a parking lot. >.<

Now I wear my buff for every ride: http://www.buffusa.com/sports/

my mom gave me one for xmas and I love the thing. No seams to dig into your head and you can wear it in like 30 ways. Not too hot for summer (the plain non-wool ones, at least)

Works as a scarf or headband so you don't even need to stuff it in a pocket or bag
