getting rid of the 2fiddy :'[
i found a 2001 zx6r on craigs list, and im straight trading my 250 for it. according to the owner, it runs perfectly until 8k rpms, where it begins to sputter a little bit, but the body is straight except a small dent in the tank. what do you guys think? it also has a full yoshi exhaust

probably even even trade, since the 600 has been in a wreck.
the carbs probably just need to be cleaned. how many miles?

nope, my 250 is flawless, has every mod that can be done to our ninjettes, minus the turbo i always wanted to slap on there lol but the zx6r has a clear carfax, so all id have to do is paint it and replace the tank in the future. the PO says the ecu is going bad and he already ordered one its on its way in the mail, and hell mail it to me. i think i have alot of fun in my future with it though 25k miles on it.

Yup, what Jason said.
I hope you checked its service history. Valve jobs on those aren't cheap. I think it's every 7500 miles for a valve check on those J models. |

Everyone I know that rides a 600 or up has like 20,000+ miles and has never checked they're valves. I just assumed they didn't need them till around 30,000 I guess I was wrong.

I used to be that way too until I did an inspection on our 250 at around 8500 and found every valve to be too tight (was wondering why the engine was running like hell).
Newer zx6's (09+) are listed to have its first check at 15k; those old J models though have them twice as frequently. Unless it's a non-US model. |

he said that hes just had a valve adjustment done on it, carbs cleaned, and jetted the carb, along with a bigger sproket. im just hoping that the ecu is the only issue, id like to punch it every now and then to redline

Wonder why it's sputtering at 8k+ rpm though after the carbs are cleaned; kinda concerning since you're gonna be without a bike after trading your 250 for it.

Lol take it from me, you may run into a few issues with a 2001 sport bike with 25k miles... My F4i was great when I got it. just needs some cosmetic love like yours, now it barely runs haha. It's probably not unheard of for 12 year old electronics to have some issues though, mine just has a bad map sensor.. which happens to be pretty expensive. As for your valves, if it's shim under bucket I don't see why it would need them every 7500. My 500 calls for adjustments every 7500 miles and it's just screw and locknut style... Yamahas don't call for them until like 27k and most guys on CBRs don't bother to check them until 30k, can't imagine kawis would be that bad. Once you get it running properly though you're in for a whole new world of riding, the power is like crack.

I would say no. I thought you had already done it lol, you can probably sell your 250 for a stupidly high price then try and find a good deal on a better condition and/or newer bike. It's 12 years old, it has problems, it will probably develop more problems if it hasn't been maintained the greatest. Sounds like a lot of headaches trying to source the issue and fix it to me. Like what I'm going through right now lol. Also do yourself a favor and get a Honda
Then again if you're comfortable with ironing out the gremlins it has and you for sure want a larger, more powerful bike, go for it! These suckers can be a pain to work on though and are a lot more technologically advanced than the 250, even a 2001. Never know when a $120 sensor is going to go out haha. |

ive done alot more work on the 250, except for engine wise, the 250 ran perfectly, the reason that i want this one is because ive always favored this body style more than the newer ones, and the engine problems i can handle, so long as its not something like a rod knock, or head gasket or something like that. im meeting the guy thurseday, and ill see what im actually dealing with, i only know what hes told me at this point

Good luck with it man, hope things turn out the best for ya. If you're willing to handle the problems then I'm sure you'll love it. I still love love love my F4i and HOPEFULLY once I iron out her current issues she'll be good to me for the rest of forever. I'm the same as you with the older styling, just with Honda lol. Never really warmed up to the 600RRs... The older bikes are bigger and curvy and hey, I like my women with a body! Plus a straight trade ain't bad considering the summer prices that bikes go for...
I just got to thinking, keep an eye out for a ZZR600. Same exact bike as the 00-02 6Rs, but it would be several years newer. |

Don't think about dropping it. Think about riding it.
If you don't think about crashing and you take as many precautions as you can with your gear choice and riding habits, it will never happen. |

I still wouldn't do it. I mean a clean ZZR for a couple hundred more, would be cheaper to get to 100%.
I mean look how clean this one is http://chicago.craigslist.org/sox/mcy/3890906386.html I bet he'd let go of that for less than $3,500 |

Just an FYI here:
The later model ZZR is the same bike as the older ZX6R. Kawasaki updated the ZX6R, but kept the previous model and renamed it the ZZR. This allowed them to carry a high tech, modern supersport, and a model that was a little less expensive while still giving 95% of the performance. Also remember that this bike is still carbureted. If you decide to go with a newer ZZR, it's not like you'll be losing any performance over this ZX6R or anything, you'll just be getting a newer bike in (hopefully) better condition. It's a good option to consider. |

Your 250 sounds like a real gem. You have lots of mods and it runs well. I'd be scared to trade into something that already might have issues. Maybe like someone said - sell the 250 and go from there.
I feel you though - you'd rather not be without a bike and this is a trade. No downtime from riding. I guess that's a plus about a straight up trade. So this guy wants your 250 and doesn't want the ZX6R? Hmmm........ I had to replace a complete wiring harness on an older 6RR. It was a nightmare to say the least. I did it myself and it cost me plenty. Plenty of money and stress. Just be careful, you have a nice bike without headaches currently. But if you go for it that's cool. Just be diligent about the maintenance. Also ebay has plenty of cheap parts available for older motorcycles. |

the guy with the zx6r says that he wants to give it to his girlfriend or wife or what ever, he was asking 2500 for the zx6r, but i offered a trade and after a thought, he agreed. i really like the zx6r, but im just concerned, because i dont want to be burned. im not concerned about loosing monetary worth, becasue my 250 has served its purpose, and allowed me to start from a wrecked bike, to something i could be proud of while also learning to ride a bike, im just ready for more power, and this bike is the only zx6r ive found that i can straight trade, and is the body style i like.

Here's a thought (but I'm a little paranoid) what if this is a little bit of a scam. If someone wanted to make $500-$1000 without doing any work they'd trade a bike worth $2500 that wasn't running at 100% for a running bike worth $3000-$3500. In this case the ZX6R is worth $2500 to him and your bike is worth $3000-$3500 on the market probably. This guy could trade with you, then immediately turn around and sell it for a profit. Not saying this guy isn't honest, but you never know. Maybe you'll get a better idea when you meet him and see the bike? Best of luck! And remember other 2001-ish ZX6Rs will pop up, this isn't the last one or the one in the best mechanical/cosmetic shape. Don't rush into it and check it out, and think it through. That sucks! Hopefully you just need some new plates. |

well i got the zx6r, it runs alright, not the best, and it needs plastics, i know the guy was wanting to trade and flip my 250, but the 250 has a few things it needs and it would cost 5-700$ to get the 250 to the best mechanically sound condition, it wasnt anything big just small maintainance things that i didnt want to sink that much money into it, when for the same ammount of money, i can have a mint zx6r, so i went ahead and traded, i love the sound and the way it drives, but it has a loss of power through all gears and rpms, and gets a bit worse at 7500+ rpms. idk what is wrong, because if it were the ecu, i would think it would run rich from ignition failure, but the exhaust gas doesnt smell rich, it smells relatively lean, or normal idk which but its definately not rich. any ideas? and a little info: it has a dynojet jet kit, and full yoshimura rs-3 exhaust system, but other than that, stock for all i can tell.

Congrats bro, hopefully you'll get it fixed soon! Check to see if throws any error codes, assuming those bikes have a built in code thing lol. Check your spark plugs, could be out of time, could have messed up jetting, lots of things could make it lose power at 7500rpms. Head to other kawi forums and ZX6R forums to see if anyone else had the same issue. Could be the ecu too, maybe it's got an issue and forgets what to do at 7.5k lol.

Sweet! I was dead set on grabbing a ZZR600 (pretty much the same as your zx6r), but ended up getting a FZ6 due to the finding a good deal on one. So I'll be interested to see your build thread!

i plan on doing pretty much the same thing that i did to the ninja on the zx6r, with an undertail, green fairings, paint the frame metalic charcoal like the ninja 250s came from the factory and misc. mods to make it my own. when i got my 250, the subframe was bent and i had to cut off the subframe from a different frame, and welded it on there my self and rebuilt the tail to make it like it was from the factory, and put on the undertail kit, integrated led tail lights, and new fairings all the way around. i dont regret any of it though, because it made me learn about bikes, and it served its purpose to introduce me to riding, and street safty, so now that i outgrew it and needed more power, i feel comfortable on the zx6r, i just cant wait to get it running right, and get her looking brand new
