Father crashed

First off, pictures will come tomorrow. Too dark outside to snap some photos.

Today my father and I were working on my bike. He was getting pissed because he couldn't figure it out and he just wanted to get me a new bike at this point. So we tweak a few things and he took it out for a ride... Well, he didn't get very far. I watched him take off, he looked like he was going pretty fast (maybe 10-15) and then he just went sideways... (this was in the backyard, so he landed on grass thank god... also he was wearing a helmet) I just sat there for a second in complete and total shock. Next thing I knew I was running towards him I arrived and saw him just laying there next to the bike, bike still running and gas dripping out, I started to help him out of reaction but he told me I had to turn the bike off before we blew up, so I hit the kill switch and helped him out.

He was okay, he ordered me to pick up the bike, and man these bikes are pretty heavy when they are side ways... I managed to get the bike back up though. My dad immediately starts telling me he wants to ride it again, I refused though and wheeled it into the shed and then brought him to the hospital (my dad is kind of weird some times and doesn't realize what's going on).

Father Damage: At the hospital we found out he had no broken bones although he has terrible (level 10) pain in his right shoulder and his ribs hurt and his ankle is pretty bad. The Doc said that he needs to see a specialist for his ankle because there is a "chip" missing out of it.

Bike Damage: Well, again, pictures will come tomorrow morning first thing. But the bikes right turn signal is completely busted off, I need to buy a new one... if any of you have one PM me please. Also the front fairing is cracked, scrapped too. Also the gas tank has some scratches on it. The exhaust on the right side was also bent back towards the bike.

Overall, I think the damage was minimal... still gonna hurt my resale value 1-2 hundred bucks I'm sure.. I'm just so thankful my dad is okay... I found out what I want to get him for father's day... a new helmet...

This crash showed me something... that safety is the absolute most important thing in the entire world... As soon as I get my new bike I am registering for the MSF course... Life is too short....

I feel sick to my stomach and blame myself.

Sounds like a painful experience. I'm glad your pop is mostly ok, and hope for the best regarding the shoulder and the ankle.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it. My father has suffered from several concussions over the last 2 years and we think he may be losing it a little.... I'm really worried this will happen on his VTX 1800 on the street.... I don't know how I could live with myself if anything ever happened.

That sounds really rough. I have an uncle who's like a dad to me, who wrecked 2 Vipers, and rides a Harley. I occasionally worry for him, but he's recognized how difficult for him to ride, and has mostly laid off and given it a rest for now. Thoughts are with you and yours, and I hope he doesn't have a crash again, especially on his VTX.

Sorry to read about the accident

If he was riding on grass, probably the front tire slid to the left; it happens very quickly.

Nobody to blame, really.

He will get well soon and both will ride many more miles.

Thanks everyone, it really means a lot to read all your posts. If it were me I would bounce back and be fine since i'm only 21. But my dad is old so I worry greatly for him.

Sounds like you've just realized the importance of gear. Armor, abrasion resistant pants/jackets, and boots. Can you imagine going down on pavement at any reasonable road speed (30 mph and up)? The thought of the bike crushing my ankle without boots makes me cringe.

This part kind of made me chuckle though lol. I've been so damn frustrated so many times while attempting to save money by doing my own work. You couldn't guess how many times I've posted my ninjette on Craigslist, only to take down a few days later after eventually fixing the problem. (the answer is twice)

Life IS too short...to be blaming yourself on things you had no control over. I'm glad it wasn't worse.

Yeah, I've spent about $250 on gear so far, I have a full face helmet, joe rocket jacket and some decent quality gloves. I still need pants and boots though.

Yeah, lol. The bike runs beautiful and is a great bike, really. Only problem is it has 2,900 miles and is 11 years old... which means it was sitting. And because of that it's carbs have always been junk since we got the bike.

That would be great! There is one problem though, my turn signals, for whatever reason... point down. I've never seen it before on any pregen ninja. So it's odd to me.

Yep, I figured out what to get him. I'm going to buy him a new motorcycle helmet... His is about 8-10 years old so... yeah. it's junk. Unfortunately he will not use anything but a half shell. I've tried many times to have him wear a full mask, he literally refuses every time... I may be able to get away with getting him a quarter shell... but who knows.

Already taken off the front fairing to begin some repairs.. I expect to get it in decent condition soon so I can sell her.

The side panels were not in the picture because they were luckily off the bike when it went down... thankfully.

On a happy side note prior the the crash the bike wasn't idling correctly... now it does... huh? Still sputters though... I don't care though I am just gonna try for 1,600 and take 1,200 if I have to. Just be done with it..

What are you going to get next? Of course after you take the MSF course.

I'm happy to read that your Dad is mostly okay. Us older folks don't bounce quite like we use to, but we do bounce back!

He's been riding for over 40 years but I bet money they could teach him some stuff he's never known!

Even if he doesn't learn anything new, it might help him remember things he's forgotten. I took the MSF myself 14 years ago, but I'm planning to go with my wife when she signs up because it'll be fun and I might get a good refresher on some fundamentals that I've unintentionally forgotten over time.

He can take the BRC2 (which is basically identical to the BRC....except you ride your own bike) for $125 or the ARC (which I will be taking later this season) for $150.

BRC2 touches on everything we've learned during the BRC, but at a faster pace. They don't make you walk the bike or go in depth about shifting or friction zone as they expect you to know that stuff already.
