Just be cautious your first time or 3; you don't have to go fast to enjoy that road

We went up Balcom Canyon (goes north, but "up" feels odd here since that direction is actually downhill) to South Mountain Road, and then west over to Ojai down the Dennison Grade.

We were doing pretty close to speed limit. No need to push it. We've gone down Grimes canyon several times, up to Santa Paula and over to Ojai. This was my first time runnning Balcom.

Where's the pistachio plantation? I'll have to look for that.

OT, but this little linguistic tidbit is something I find interesting, as a person who makes his living as a writer.

The conventions we grew up with influence how we see the world... The only reason we have "up north," "down south," "out west" and "back east" (and for our Australian friends, "down under") is because we've spent our lives looking at maps and globes where north is at the top... plus we have the whole historical narrative of the expansion of the United States from east to west.

I like paper maps (yeah, so I'm an iconoclast), and often prefer to view them "upside down" or "sideways." Gives you a different perspective and understanding of where you are, and what's actually close by. It's amazing how distorted our views are, simply because of those biases.

Do you set your GPS to "north up" or "direction up?" Always the latter for me.

Sorry for the hijack. We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread, which is already in progress.

::giggle:: I like linguistics, too, and thus my comment about up/north/downhill.

And I turn paper maps to match my orientation. Apparently most women do that, and most men commonly turn the map in their head instead of turning the paper map.

GPS gets set to show my direction of travel being up. It's got a little compass point in the corner if I care which direction is north, but I generally have a pretty good idea anyway.

When my ex and I drove to Cali, I drove she navigated. Somewhere around Kansas or so I started turning right when she said left and visa versa. No problems from then on.

Direction up for me as well. I care about upcoming rights and lefts; the cardinal direction is irrelevant when using a GPS. It's also more familiar to long time video gamers - the direction you're facing is almost always up by default in game HUDs/radars/etc.

Good gravy so it's you weirdos that prompted the option on GPSs to have a "direction up", how in the world do you orient yourself?

Ugh, north up for me.

When I get a wifi connection I'll get a map & post up the route. I don't know the hwy#'s, just remember what a wonderful route it was! I rode it 6-7 years ago

In my defense, GPS has been around longer than I have, and civilian/commercial implementations with that option almost certainly predate my acquisition of a driver's license.

For orientation, all the same skills that work with a paper map still work. The displayed compass, physical references, the giant fission reactor crossing the sky in an alarmingly consistent direction, and so on.

Highway 33 "North" out of Ojai!
The pistachio plantation is in the valley on the other side of the mountAin from Ojai. They have a store with dozens of flavours of pistachios!
Best part is to turn around once your saddle bags are full of nuts and do the mountain road again!

Ah, right, up through Rose Valley. Husband and I went 2-up with the bike club up that way though we didn't get to the pistachio place. Definitely a fun ride, and a lot of people run that way.
