$1,500 budget to transport bike cross country

Scenario:

I have a friend who is moving from NYC to SF. He needs to transport his bike. He does not have a car. But has a dog. His original plan. Fly to SF with his dog. Pay a company to transport the bike.

However, myself and another friend just so happen to be free that very same week. After a few beers, we decided we (3 dudes, 1 dog and 1 motorcycle) can take a road trip.

With a $1,500 budget, how should we do this???

Cargo van rental? Bike inside?
Long bed 4 door pick up truck rental? Bike on the bed?
Rent any sedan/minivan/suv with a hitch receiver. Rent a trailer?

Anyone do a long trip like this before?

PS - Rentals must be one way rentals. My friend & I will be flying back.

Rent a side car, two up on the bike and one and the dog in the side car lol

So not riding the bike out? You account for gas in that budget, or that is just for gas?

uship.com Or Party errr... Box truck from uhaul. Gas + rental + gas should fit within the budget.

The memories from making the trip with friends, priceless.

There's really only one bike in this story? Spend a few $$$ on some farewell beers.

Your friend gets on his own bike and waves you goodbye. You close the door and he rides to California with his dog on the back of the bike like young Kipper here:

Its only 3000miles.

If there are other bikes then the more the merrier, just have a soda instead before riding off.

At the very least you could mind the dog for the few days it takes him to ride to California, then you put the dog onto the plane to San Fran.

SOMEBODY has to ride the bike

One way rent + fuel + hotels + two airplane tickets can easily go over budget.

Consider also cost of changing registration and driver's license.

I would try PODS to see if they transport a bike + fluids and if there are means to restrain the bike inside the container.

Sell and buy would be another option.

I think you're least expensive option would be to have the bike shipped through uship.com.

If you're in it for the adventure, I would rent/buy a small trailer/hitch for a vehicle you already own and drive it both ways as gas will be cheaper than 2 airplane tickets - unless you get a spectacular deal.

Bike shipped through Uship.com is well over $1000. His flight for him and his dog will be $200-$400 bux.

That's why he is offering a budget of $1500 for rental (and gas).

There are 3 bikes in the picture. But my other friend and I can only take 1 week off from work. That's why we need to fly back to NYC (we are paying for our own flights).

Another issue is....can he register his bike in CA? I know emissions are really strict.

Damn, apparently uship has gone up big time! I had a bike shipped form WA to CO for $350, didn't think another 1,500miles would be that much...

And now I'm confused. 3 bikes in the picture?

What type of dog/how big is the dog?

No no. Only 1 bike to ship over. The dog is a roughly 75lbs.

Money isn't an object as long as it isn't too expensive. We'll be happy if the $1500 covers rental (car/truck/van and/or trailer) and gas.

Problem is....it's difficult to find anyone that will rent for a one way trip.

I moved from NY to SF about 7 years ago and had my car shipped. I think it cost <$2k on an open trailer. That's gonna be the going rate to rent a uhaul or something too. You can make coast to coast in under 3 days if you take turns driving.

Riding the bike there would seem like the most logical answer, he does like to ride motorcycles does he not?

He does. But he's concern with going solo and having a mechanical problem. He's also worried about the dog's comfort (and possible hearing loss) after 3,000 mile on the back of a bike.

Selling the bike is a good option too, and buying another one when he gets to Cali. I'm sure he thought of that already, but I can't see him losing more than $1500 with this option.

No experience here but my best guess would be to rent a 4 door truck with a long enough bed to get the bike in and close the tailgate. Probably be the most comfortable for all, including the bike. my

Good luck!

Not if people want to sit on seats.

One or two people, one dog, one bike in the van.

I realize this is an old thread but vehicle registration in Ca might be an issue too. With all their stupid envir laws and stuff, will they even let him register this bike and ride it in Ca? That's the reason for the Cali models of everything.
