Steel gas tank repair

I have a crack in my gas tank which someone already tried to fix with cheap flex seal... Was thinking of brazing it shut but everyone says it won't work any tips?

the problem is that the inside will continue to rust and will start clogging up the fuel filter / carb jets

It's not rusted out the bikes been dropped on that side and the bolts sticking out now and not flush like the other side. but I could use a inner tank coater to deal the inside once it's shut but want to know if it'll braze because on a bunch of other sites they say you can't

Any steel can be glued together with enough heat and cleanness of the surfaces; the real problem is the danger of explosion, which is high even when the interior has been cleaned.

Please, please, do not attempt doing it yourself; a good shop should know how to do it safely: I have seen it done many times, .... and I have known of some explosions as well.

If you must do it yourself, do not use a live flame, use a solder iron and soft solder, after cleaning the surface and inside the crack (and inside the tank if possible) absolutely well.

I would clean the tank out with compressed air removing any remaining vapours and while doing any heating I would have a line bleeding nitrogen into the tank so ignition won't be possible

Sounds like a plan.

When you get ready to seal the inside of the tank, this is the stuff to use. Infinitely better than Kreem, Red Kote, etc. If I were you, I'd drill two small holes at the end of the crack to prevent any further cracking, tape over the crack, and then just use the Caswell. It strengthens the tank as well as sealing it. http://www.caswellplating.com/restor...nk-sealer.html

Please don't do it.

Although the most of air is nitrogen, pure N2 (28.0 g/mol) is lighter that air; hence, you will have O2 trying to sneak into the cavity.

I would look for a used tank in good condition.
