Believe it or not, I just got an email from the guys at Finish Line (maker of the stuff) - actually it was the VP of product development - saying the cans are exactly the same stuff. Should have just emailed Dupont in the first place. Have not tried it yet.

Wow, I wish I would have found this thread last year.

I just went to Lowe's to buy another can, and was very disappointed to see they didn't still have the blue aerosol I was in love with. I picked up the little dropper bottle of the new chain stuff, since I didn't have a choice at this point. I'm glad to hear though that others like it.

After reading the article Alex linked to, I went to check the near-empty can in my garage.... wouldn't you know it, I was using the new [wrong] formula all last year, and didn't even know it. Hopefully this hasn't reduced the life of my chain.....

It's still lube and shouldn't be damaging. The difference is that it isn't a dry lube now and so it might spray off the chain onto your bike.

I just applied the new chain stuff in the dropper bottle. I was hopeful that it would be awesome, and last forever due to minimal waste. I used the same type of stuff in dropper bottle on my mountain bike, so I thought I knew what to expect. To my disappointment the fluid pretty much flowed out of the bottle just from tipping, and no squeezing. I estimate I'll get a total of 3 uses (MAYBE 4, but doubt it) out of this peace of crap.

Yep. My first reaction to the little drop bottles too...the spray can version does the same (liquidy) but imo if you have a steady trigger finger makes it easier to apply than having it just flow out.

If there were an easy way to restrict flow by reducing the size of the hole, the dropper would be much improved. But you're right about getting good with the spray can. I'll have to look to see who sells the aerosol.

A little late, but I just picked up some new lube today. It is identical to the old DuPont wax lube...the stuff everyone tried to load up on after they made a change to their formula. I picked it up for $6 after coupon at an Advance Auto Parts. I know people were crazy about the old DuPont stuff, so I figured I would share.

Thankfully I still have some of the original Dupont dry-wax teflon lube. Didn't stock up; was just not great at lubing my first bike so had plenty left. Also found another can in my parents garage and took that lol. I might check out that lube when I run out though. Definitely let us know how it works!

The Dupont dry lube is better. A lot less mess and fling off.

Yeah, I have noticed that this stuff is good, but quite messy and sticky as hell, like a magnet for dirt

How much is the dupont chain saver at walmart? cheaper than $12

Bumping this thread with some tidbits.

In one of the July 2013 weekly issues of MCN, the Dupont Chain Saver formula was basically described as horrible. The testers described that after a 400 mile ride, they found their chain to be noisy, dry and with kinks. Another kick in the beans, they compared it to the new blue can formula Dupont multi-use and liked the blue can better even though both webbikeworld and Dupont themselves no longer recommend it for motorcycle chains .

Now even though many websites and magazines don't like the chain saver product, the makers of Dupont Chain Saver, Finish Line, claim that the chain saver formulation is similar to the old teflon multi use. From webbikeworld quoting Dupont:

"If you want to obtain that same dry-wax formulation, you should switch to DuPont Teflon Chain-Saver... The formulations are very similar -- Chain Saver has more moly and more Teflon so it has better wear protection. Everything else is exactly the same."

Webbikeworld says that Dupont states the change was for "complex reasons". So I dug around the interweb and came across a thread where someone got this response from Dupont:

"In October 2011, due to changing VOC regulations in California, we were forced to modify the Multi-Use dry wax formulation so that it no longer contains the dry wax feature... The good news is that we can produce the old Multi-Use formulation labeled as DuPont Teflon Chain Saver. This is due to a section of the CARB regulations that allows specialty products to be exempt from VOC limits. Keep in mind also that we are not vastly above VOC limitations. They simply lowered it to a level that is unrealistic for many manufacturers to meet without the price of the product quadrupling or without using VOC-exempt propellants which damage your paint (e.g. Acetone). The formulation of DuPont Teflon Chain Saver is EXACTLY THE SAME as the old Multi-Use.

So two conflicting responses, one claiming very similar formulas, the other claims they are exactly the same. I have a hard time believing the latter but personally have had decent results with the Chain Saver product. It doesn't attract dirt and whenever I clean my bike, I see very little fling off. One thing that may back up the claims by MCN is that I do notice that it needs to be reapplied more often than other lubes and perhaps why after a 400 mile trip, it didn't hold up. If anyone else has experience with Chain Saver, it would be interesting for you to share your results.

DuPont Chain Saver is the only product I've ever used for lubing my chain. ~14,000 miles so far with no problems.

Been using it since I bought the bike. Can't really comment on extended mile wear since I clean and lube my chain a lot. Probably every 300 miles or so. Its easy with this stuff so I say why not.

I also use DuPonts chain cleaner. Works good.

The Dupont Motorcycle Degreaser is really well reviewed by webbikeworld.

Has anyone here actually had problems with the Dupont Chain Saver? The criticism by MCN doesn't make any sense. Why would applying a specific chain lube ONE time cause a chain to have kinks in it? They need to post more information about how old their chain was, how many miles on it, and if they applied the lube properly.

I've always preferred Wurth dry chain lube, that is before I got my scottoiler.

Try it as an alternative.

You happy with that? I like the idea but don't dislike chain maint enough to justify the cost.

Never had a problem with Chain Saver - I clean every 400 to 500 miles. Every time the chain looks clean and the lube is still visible and working with no problems.

Just FYI - I ride IOM TT style on a ZX6R and both the chain and sprockets show no signs of wear after 2 years.

Scottoiler's are the best thing you can do for the chain of your bike, set and forget, I check my chain weekly "Yep, it still looks brand new, yep the bottle is almost full still, perfect"

So I think Dupont changed their chain lube once again due to the negative response. Just bought a small can to try it out and it does not come out all thick and sticky like it did before. Nothing like what was shown on review videos. It went on clean and thin like the rest but dries nicely without any stickiness. I'm sold!

My understanding it that the original formula change was due to some EPA BS. If it's actually true they changes again, I assume it would be a new third formula.

On the second formula it was very thick and almost foamy, the can I just bought of the yellow can chain lube is like the original to me. Fan of it so far, especially the price. I had been using the blue can pj whatever is called. Sticky as hell and collects dirt, plus $12 a can
