Smile Newbie on long-distance trip!

Hi everyone! I rode my Ninja 250 from Toronto to Miami (I left in Nov) and want to go west after bike week and back up north (in the spring) to BC then across Canada. But no set plans, just kinda what I feel like doing. I'm wondering if there is anyone else on this forum who has done a long-distance trip on a ninjette!? Would love to hear your story. I've only heard of one guy and he did a 26,000 mile trip in a year on a ninja 250, including going up to Alaska

Yep! There's a few of us scattered around that like seeing for far the road goes. Welcome aboard, fellow long distance rider!

You can check out the ride reports section for some good stories anywhere from day trips to month long vacations. Not sure if I've seen a tale such as yours here, but I haven't read them all.

It sounds like you are on one awesome adventure. Would love to hear more details!

Very cool man! So you're just riding until you feel like stopping?? That's the life..

I've got a couple 1,000 mile trips planned for the summer, then I'll join the long distance Ninjette club!

I did do a trip to North Carolina last year, personally I'm glad I did some modifications, especially the seat before the trip, muck more comfortable for sure, no monkey butt.

Also proper riding gear makes all the difference for sure.

Hi everyone!!!! Roark I'm a chick! And the tent is a $20 kids tent I bought at walmart. I camped in rain and frost with that thing. It packs pretty small too. The good compact tents were like $300 (ouch)

I'm so glad to hear there are other Ninja 250 long-distance riders out there, I'll have to find them, I'll just have to find them on this website. I blog all my travels too. I'm going to be travelling on this bike for at least another 4 months (2 down!). I'm canadian so once my 6 months in the US is up I have to leave or else

I've had a lot of people tell me (for a road trip) a 250 is too small, that a "crotch-rocket" is unsuitable, and make fun of it etc, but since it's all I've ever ridden (and the insurance and mileage is amazing!) I think it's great!!! I honestly do not regret taking a trip on this bike, better than waiting a whole year to get something bigger... who knows what would have happened by then.

Normally I get sore after 2 hours of riding and stop and walk around for 10 min. The most hours I've ridden in a day was 11, ouch! I was thinking of getting some sort of gel seat cover...

I love the wind though (even if it's cold), would not want to block it with a windshield though I hear it makes things more comfortable. Ghostt, what seat did you use?

I'll ride until I need money then I'll find a temp job then keep riding... lol. I've decided that's what I want my life to be right now, I put my stuff in storage and there is no need to go back to my home town anytime soon (Toronto)

I modified it myself, it's too difficult to do, also their a sources that will take your OEM seat and do the modifications to your specifications.

Here's my write-up including the other sources, I personally have seen the work that great day to ride has done, and I would recommend his services, and he's very reasonably priced as well.

https://www.ninjette.org/forums/blog.php?b=8352

Also other DIY projects from my blog,
https://www.ninjette.org/forums/blog.php?u=18557

If you find yourself in my neck of the woods, we should hook up, a lot of pretty back roads around here for sure.

Well, excuse me, ma'am

You lead an inspiration life, Miss Vagabondess. Yours is a great story for all to read. Do you have a link for your blog, assuming it's accessible to read? I'm sure it'd be quite interesting!

For your seat conundrum, @Ghostt will chime in shortly about his fix..

Other options include sheepskin covers, bead covers, gel covers, and the like.

Other (more expensive) options include new seats entirely, like a Corbin.

I can't speak from personal use, as I've never ridden longer than 2-3 hours, thus never needing to upgrade my seat, but I will likely end up purchasing a spare seat from eBay, hacking away some foam, and inserting a gel piece..

Good luck with your travels!!

In addition, check out this page.. Loads of information to add to your cranial arsenal:

You'll find other solutions to the seat problem, as well as many, many others.

If you where near TN, I'd give ya mine and install it (if needed)
but since on road and these are common at a lot of bike dealerships.
Get a "pro pad" in medium size --$50-80 (depending on mark up).
Fits perfect on 250.

Ooh, I love DIY stuff! Thank you for the links, Ghostt. I don't know how to tag people here.. ahem I will figure it out.

And Roark *curtseys* thanks for expressing interest in my blog! I don't really write much at all, I mostly just post pictures and random travel inspiration. It's vagabondess.tumblr.com, I do want to start a proper blog sometime maybe, since I sort of never want to stop travelling and have found ways to keep it cheap (couchsurfing, for instance. It actually costs me less to travel than to live in the same spot).

250rr, I am thinking of trying to get a work visa here, it would make it easier to find a job and I could get a chance to visit the rest of the states! And kind of take my time traveling. If I stayed here past the 6 months allowed for visitors, I could get in big trouble, like get banned from visiting the US for years. Finding under-the-table jobs seems very easy in the US though, but I'd worry about the day I'd want to leave the US.. and getting fined or something lol.

EsrTek Thanks! Too cold in TN now, I did pass through there though! I'm sure I could find a used pad on Craigslist too, thanks! I love craigslist!

Ghostt I LOVED the roads in KY, probably the prettiest part of my ride so far, but only got to pass through (it was so cold). The A1A was an amazing ride too. I can't wait to ride to Key West!

Allanoue thanks I'm glad I'm here too

csmith12 don't be jelly, just do it! : D ride like the wind

PS who here has been to Daytona bike week? I'm actually staying in Florida to wait for bike week then west to Cali. I've only been to one rally and loved it, that was Friday the 13th at Port Dover. I hitchhiked like a maniac to get there, then bought my motorcycle after that

You tag people by putting an @ in front of their name.

@Vagabondess

See? :-)

Scroll through the Ride Reports, there are a lot more in there. And we have several members in Florida. I think @CC Cowboy is near Daytona... maybe?

Family life keeps me from traveling as much as I would like but.... Planning on being in Daytona for bike week this year. Last year we did Myrtle Beach bike week. It was a good time aside of my wife getting a sunburn like she ALWAYS does....

I was at Daytona Bike week last yr at this time...we also got there a few days early last yr and I ended up leaving 1 day early.
To me it was a Harley fest, got tired of dirty looks and snide comments. Seeing as I looked extra off to them w the go-pro off helmet and on a sport bike.
Anyway, I'll never bother w one again-- just wasn't much to do unless you really enjoy walking your bike or just park and walk, or an alcohol drinker (I'm not).

If you are down there, take a ride on the beach!! (think I got vids of that on my youtube).
Sat should be a pretty good stunt show and race at track (It was like 8am last yr) so not many ppl wanted to go.

EDIT: Lol in fact here is what you can expect to see a lot of:

Link to original page on YouTube.

I always wants to be a hobo, but not as much as I wanted to be a junk man... As of yet I've done many things but never either of the ones I really wanted to do. I'm not the indoor hoarder type, and folks don't like junk piled up in the places I've lived so far.

I'm off to check your blog cause this sounds like far and away the most interesting story for today!

Best of luck an wishes for you an your journey... You couldn't have picked a better bike

Welcome Vagabondess! There are quite a few Ninjetter long distance riders here as NevadaWolf ( IB queen ) has pointed out.
I've done 4 multi-day rides: SF,CA to Ohio and Kentucky, Missouri to Ohio, SF CA to Las Vegas , and SF CA to Utah. I have a friend who has ridden his Ninjette streamliner coast to coast every summer for the past 3 years.

Wow you've got some guts. I couldn't do such a long trip in the winter.. Are you afraid of getting stuck in a snow storm or riding across ice?

Hello all! I may have...erm... disappeared for awhile and forgot the email and password for my other account here so I just made a new one out of laziness. I ended up riding to Key West, Texas, Kansas City and then back to Ontario. I got back exactly 6 months later! I guess I was being a Granny but whatever. I have stopped to make some extra cash (because why not) and am planning to hit the road again in October and go to Mexico this time too (maybe). Some guy went to Mexico on his Ninjette.. I will have to find that thread.. I would love to eventually ride around the world, but I don't think I will ride my Ninja.. I would want to get a dual purpose bike.
@EsrTek and @csmith12 I ended up making it to Daytona for just the last few days (I was stuck on a sailboat in key west prior to that). It wasn't really crazy or anything like I thought, they actually separated it into 3 sections just to avoid craziness, and had a lot of cops. I did enjoy it though. I won a shirt... also my earrings got ruined from a nearby burnout! @csmith12 just force your wife to wear spf 110 sunscreen, it works! That spf 50 stuff is meh
@Roark I may attempt to do an iron butt on the Ninja. I know many people have done it and I think it would be fun. Definitely would need a seat cover for that.
@JohnnyBravo did you like my blog? (mostly photos I know). Speaking of hobos, I honestly think the hobos in key west (and Florida in general) live much better lives than rich Canadian people...
@greenaero that is great to hear! Before buying my Ninja people kept telling me I couldn't ride it on the highway or long distance... can't wait to tell them about that! Coast to coast! I think the Ninjette is more capable than many would think.
@Hero Danny Ice almost got me killed!!! Never again. I was an idiot to have left on a road trip so late. Not this time.
@Ghostt (thanks!) yeah, I had a few problems with creepers (mostly harmless), but as one creepy guy at a truck stop told me, I don't look like victim material... haha! it's one of the first questions people ask me when they find out I am traveling alone... aren't I afraid?.. but I'm not letting a few serial killers stop me from living life.. I will try and keep myself out of bad situations and stay armed etc. but safety is also more expensive. then again who would expect a girl to be camping at a walmart next to a motorcycle? I think bars are probably the best hunting grounds for people who are looking for victims... ok getting carried away here...
@snot @Snake @KJohnson21 @liberpolly thank you for the welcoming and kind wishes!

Cool

On Advrider.com about 5 years ago, there was a detailed trip report of a guy and girlfriend riding 2-up (with camping gear) from Texas to Argentina on a pre-gen 250.

http://advrider.com/index.php?thread...entina.675841/

It's an interesting ride report with lots of photos. At the end of the trip, they sold the bike and flew home.

@capt_bugaloo thank you SO much for sharing! I have been looking for stuff like that. I just read the whole thing from start to finish and I am overly excited now.. daydreaming of doing the same, despite not knowing any Spanish whatsoever!

I did recently find an article somewhere about a middle aged woman who rode her Harley from the US to Panama, and knew hardly any spanish.

If I survived 8 months in Egypt barely knowing any Arabic (that changed!) then I'm sure I could survive anywhere.

A lot of people insist I need a bigger bike, a different bike, but the guy from that thread pointed out a lot of the benefits of having a smaller bike!
@NevadaWolf *waves back* thank you!!! I like your little US state map by the way..
