Low-res picture, but I'm assuming you're referring to all the pink.

Isn't it just as insulting that pink MC gear is also advertised prominently for women?

Personally I will use pink tools but prefer black because it matches the grease. I don't buy pink tools, guns or gear. With one exception, my helmet because it does stand out more, my gloves only came in pink so I don't count them
Guns and tools should not look like toys just my opinion.

The pink crap tools at Wal-Mart is specifically marketed to women (and the blue tools right next to it for the guys).

However, that is making me suspicious its all for Susan G Komen. The amount of pointless pink junk they come out with this time of year is sickening. I mean who seriously buys pink vacuums or microwaves?!?

It's not that they're saying only women can buy pink tools or women can only buy tools if they're pink. They're trying to attract a feminine audience. They're ENCOURAGING women to start using tools and fix stuff themselves; you can still be a girly-girl and love doing home improvement projects.

Honestly, I'd buy the pink tools so I know when someone borrowed my tools from 50 yards out. Maybe then they'd be less likely to grow legs and walk away!

Just because a girl has pink tools don't mean she knows how to use them. Same goes for boys, if the tools are blue he might not know how to use them.

You can encourage women a lot better by not having such a stigma against them doing manly things in the first place - we get brought up with that crap from birth and get shouted down and laughed at every time we try to break the mold. Plus a lot of the machinery-type environments aren't very woman friendly, what with Bubba over there licking his lips while openly staring at your boobs and the like. Pink tools won't make those things poof out of existence.

Making everything pink is completely misunderstanding what drives women away in the first place.

Also fun fact - about a hundred years ago, pink was the "manly" color and blue was the "girly" color. Shows how much everything is a product of the completely random social stigmas/allowances that are around during your generation.

I understand all the social issues with inequality between men and women, and they piss me off a lot. But, using your logic, GoldieBlox isn't going to help any girls either, right?

Link to original page on YouTube.

Seriously, there isn't a whole lot tool manufacturers can do to encourage more women to enter STEM fields, but they're doing something.

Yeah, I know what you mean. It just gets so blindingly frustrating sometimes. Plus it's easy to see how it could seem like it's just reinforcing harmful stereotypes.

I understand the reinforcing harmful stereotypes thing. It's hard for me to see those sometimes because I grew up in a family where gender norms were not enforced at all. If my sister wanted Hot Wheels and Lego's for her birthday, she got 'em. If I wanted a Barbie (or maybe a pink toolset :P) for Christmas, I got it.

Within families, it's one thing. I grew up with a dad who didn't care if I wanted Lazer Tag along with Care Bears.

But in society it's tough, especially when things are so black or white. It's never "Barbie or Lego?" it's "Boy or girl?" I grew up when Lego's were Lego's, now they have a line directly aimed at girls because all of the "boy" kits.

When it comes to products, aside from a very very limited number of items, why do they have to be targeted to one gender or another? Nothing wrong with pink tools, if other colors were available also. Why not red, blue, green, or yellow? Why are most tools just tools, but pink gets the froo froo packaging?

Think back 30 years, stuff was just stuff. Get rid of the targeted products, make it neutral again, and let things be bought to be used vs just another gimick.

*sigh* Sore subject for me since I never fit into being a "girl" but knew I could never be accepted as a "boy", so having to live with expectations that didn't fit who I am sucked.

I have worked in boy jobs since I was a kid. One of my first jobs was at an auto parts store. It shocked customers when I was in the parking lot changing a transmission line. Proving I knew what I was doing was rough but I had support from other team members. I was also an outside sales rep for Kenworth (parts), stereo types suck.

I was always bothered by the stigma of the "pink" aisles at the toy stores, Walmart and such.

Also thats at Sears. And when I looked at the tools they seem to me to be crap. The hammers are to stubby to be good for much more than hanging a picture or something.

If the really wanted to encourage women to fix things themselves they should offer good quality tools over pink crap.
