Need help, exhaust glowing red

Hi

My dear ninjette has been in an underground garage for about a year now. I didn't ride her anymore because I've bought another bike (Yamaha Fazer8). Every once in a while I fired her up and rode around until she was hot.

Lately the battery has been running down as well, so my solution was to jump start the bike by rolling down a level

Anyhow, it's been about a month since her last run and now I'm having troubles. She starts but either dies immediately or stays between 5k-7k when giving it gas. After a while I noticed the part of the exhaust tube just in front of the slip on was glowing red and suddenly my FI light turned on as well.

Also the sound is not normal: sputtering and moaning.

If I have to do an uneducated guess: only one of the cylinders is actually working and the second one just blows everything through the exhaust valve. Then, combustion happens in the exhaust tube due to high temperatures.

Is my assumption correct? Is there an easy fix? I don't have any tools over here and I was just about to make the 100km ride to home with this bike, for maintenance. Looks like I'm a day too late....

Hey Michael,

maybe your problem is a spark plug or ignition cable.

But anyway check the FI-Errorcode and reset it, see the attached pdf.

And important: the battery MUST be fully charged.

Good luck

Do these have catalytic converters over there?

I agree with Somchai's post above and disagree with your guess, because exhaust temperatures are unable to initiate a combustion.

That red glowing of the exhaust pipe only happens due to out of sync timing regarding either exhaust valve or spark.

Your valves-cams have not been adjusted recently; hence, I would focus on the electronics of your FI system that decide over the spark timing.

My question too. That area would be where the cat is and glow red if there is a blockage. Seems unlikely though no?

I hope it's ok when I answer the question about the catalytic converter.
Yes, the Ninja 250R FI-Model has one, since she is Euro-3 legal there must be one in the exhaust-system and normally the converter is always behind the 02-sensor (must be).
When you mount a slip-on exhaust in Germany this also must have a catalytic converter to be street-legal, what could mean the stock converter is in the muffler.

Sounds like it's running dangerously lean...

A miss fire due to spark in one cylinder will dump that cylinders air fuel mixture into the exhaust stream where it then will combust at the catalytic converter.
A glowing head pipe coming out at the head would indicate a lean fuel mixture.

Sorry but I don't understand why you'd answer this to me - do I have to understand?
