2009 Ninja 250R

Hello guys I'm new to my newly acquired 2009 Ninja 250R. Anyone here by any chance have a used 'Race Tech - Gold Valve Cartridge Emulators' for sale? Also, has anyone used Sonic Springs before with sprung for the riders weight?

As far as Emulators go, try RICOR INTIMINATOR instead, members here use them, and say they are better.

As far as springs goes, you could just cut the OEM ones to the weight you need, and add spacers etc... I've done this to both my Ninjette and EX500.

Member @InvisiBill can explain it beet than me, he also runs the RICOR as well.

Those are just the values from RaceTech's calculator, not real world experience. There seems to be some confusion around how much weight the rear spring is ideal for, so I would suggest checking the sag settings yourself. It would be nice if people would report back with what springs they used for what weights, so we could get a better estimate.


Spring length is a simple calculation. Length1 * Rate1 = Length2 * Rate2. Just solve for whichever value you're trying to find. Your spacer length will necessarily vary based on your spring rate and preferred sag setting.

I've heard that all the decent manufacturers use the same materials and methods to make springs, so they're all basically the same product in the end. I got my RaceTechs off Amazon for ~$90 shipped.

They actually replace the fixed orifice damping system with a bending shim setup, like a real cartridge fork. You can fine tune them by changing the number and size of the shims, so they're pretty much infinitely adjustable. They're not yet as popular as Emulators though, so there don't seem to be many people familiar with tweaking them. For my street riding, just dropping them in as is was a nice improvement.

Welcome! I bought Sonic springs as im pretty huge. No complaints. Toughest part is figuring out how long to cut the provided spacers.

Cutting springs is easy once you've done the math, spacers are a bit harder. With mine I used a spare set of springs from an Ex500 1st gen, which has a 20.5" spring, plenty of room to cut. So once I did some calculations, well to be honest I've done this before on my 91 EX500, so I already knew I had to cut off 5.5". As my own rule of thumb I used the amount cut +2" to make my spacers, which as too much as I had no sag whatsoever.

I ended up with amount I cut off length + 1", 6.5" total spacer length . This is ideal for my weight, and style of riding, and my sag is dead on now.

For what to use for spacers, some use PVC, I use 3/4" steel pipe, or black pipe for you plummers out there.

I haven't had the $$ to get a pair of RICOR but it's on the list, I did however change my fork oil to 15wt, and as I said this set-up works for me.

I've done the rear as well, but that's a different subject.
