I am the god of hellfire, and I bring you...

FIRE!!!

Just got the Area P I picked up installed. Need to remove the stupid Kleen air nonsense, and then get into the jets. That said, she does already run better. I suspect some jet work had previously been done, since when I swapped back to the stocker from the MGP Growler, there was a significant fall-off in power (not to mention noise...). I think one of the previous owners did the jetting when they installed the MGP, since it ran better on the top end with that pipe installed. With the full system, there is a noticeable difference in the level of pull the bike has.

Now I've just got to get back to the mainland where I can get this thing to a track...

Looks sikk! That happens because there's more air in the mix or less air?

That is caused by un burnt fuel in the exhaust stream.

Either condition can be the cause of slow combustion.

Copied from:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Back-fire

"Backfiring in internal combustion engines occur outside of the combustion chamber, and are typically the result of an improper air to fuel ratio. An overly lean air-fuel mixture (i.e. an overabundance of air) can lead to a failure to ignite in the combustion chamber, also called a "misfire". The unburnt fuel then enters the exhaust system, where hot components can cause the fuel to ignite unpredictably. Alternatively, rich air-fuel mixtures (i.e. an overabundance of fuel) can result in incomplete combustion, again causing unburnt fuel to enter the exhaust system."

The blue color of this particular flame indicates that the mix is rich in oxygen.

"With increasing oxygen supply, less black body-radiating soot is produced due to a more complete combustion and the reaction creates enough energy to excite and ionize gas molecules in the flame, leading to a blue appearance."

When noisy, the combustion started before the exhaust valves opened, then built pressure and popped out (breaking mufflers open sometimes).

When silent, the combustion was so slow that started after the exhaust valves opened (no useful work was exerted over the piston); therefore, your internal combustion engine became an external combustion engine or mobile barbecue.

This is more of the 'unburnt gas gets hit by the Kleen system on its way out' situation. Choke was still on to warm the bike up, so when I got it to finally start taking throttle without dying, I noticed the flames when I'd chop the throttle. Bike goes off, out comes the GoPro, and we go for broke. From idle, whack the throttle open until the revs start to climb past 6-7k, then chop it closed. Kaboom! Classic backfire. Except in the case of a very short MC exhaust (vs the 10'+ one on my last muscle car), the flames make it well past the muffler

Oh, and the thread title lyric came from The Prodigy (highlighted at :33 in this clip):

Who gratuitously lifted it from The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown's original:

Yea now it is. The fuel/air mixture is supposed to be burnt/explode in the cylinders not the exhaust.

If I was a photo guy at the track, I would specifically look for this and get pics of it against a contrasting background.
