Different color rear seat cowl

Hey Guys and Girls,

So I ordered a rear seat cowl online without doing enough research on if the paint would match. My ninja 2012 is a passion red but the color of the cowl i recieved is on the lighter red more orange side. I guess thats what you get for a 35 dollar cowl which does fit prefectly.

I need suggestions on what to do next.

Thank you.

Welcome Roger!

ColorRite has got your answer! Just pick your method of application.

If time is no issue, can you exchange it for the proper color?

paint it

Dont know how much that would be though.
If you're crafty you could probably do something with pinstriping and decals...

Spend $10 on some 3m Di-noc carbon wrap and go with the carbon look.

Well, depends on how crafty you are.

Return it, order the right color.
Sell it to someone with that shade, order the right color.
Sand it down, paint it with the right color.
Live with it.

When i repaired my bike, I intentionally ordered fairings/cowlings that didn't match to get them cheap, then went through ColorRite to get the OEM color and painted them myself. Comes out looking perfect if you take your time to do it right.

FYI I am not a painter, the following is simply what worked for me.

With just the cowl, one can of aerosol would work. If you go through ColorRite, just need the top coat ($34) and the base coat ($34) for the Passion Red color only and a Clear Coat ($17) to make it all shiny again (which can be picked up anywhere).

Just sand everything down to just above the primer (when the grey barely shows through) using a very high grit sand paper to ensure it is perfectly smooth. Clean it off so nothing gets under the paint, then set up someplace to paint. I used a roll of construction paper to cover the floor and wall around my work space. Start spraying away from the cowl and sweep smoothly and evenly across until off the cowl again before letting up on the nozzle. Repeat back and forth following ColorRite's instructions for proper application.

The cowl is small enough that not much work will be involved to repaint it. The hard part is the sanding so where the prior color doesn't mess up the top color.

Oh, if you have found the cowl for the same price as the paint, go with the cowl! Why bother painting when the factory has done it for you.
