Someone posted something regarding intersections...
And I would really like if I could find the thread. S/he talks about how riding behind a vehicle could potentially put you at risk with someone on the other side waiting for an opportunity to make a left turn.
I've noticed how possible this is. Say you're behind a van, the car opposite of you, sees the van as the last car to wait for until making that left. It means he failed to see your bike. He takes that left, hits you, done. I've taken this to heart and always ride as safely as possible to the left of the vehicle and far enough of the vehicle so that the cars trying to make a left do see me. Oh and if I'm for some reason tucked in, say a 55mph road with traffic lights, I'll sit as straight up as possible to be even more visible **** . Your thoughts?

This scenario is one reason why I wear a neon helmet.
My head is above the roofline of most cars... wearing a dark helmet would make me invisible to the oncoming left-turner until the bike emerges from behind the car. Doesn't do any good behind a van, but every little bit helps. That scenario always calls for low speeds and great caution, especially when behind some obscenely large vehicle. Always assume that there's an oncoming driver looking to turn across your lane.

When it's possible, I try to weave left-right in those situations, to give cars on both sides a better chance of seeing me.
This reminds me of a different situation with similar principles. If you're coming up behind a big-rig that's making a right hand turn into a parking lot; it's very tempting to twist your wrist and fly past it. But there's always the (very likely) chance that a car is waiting to turn left or right out of said parking lot. Cars like to jump out in front of trucks turning, because they're going so slow.

you are much safer hiding in the shadow of a car going straight through the intersection than you would be by yourself, in front of, or a distance behind another car. somebody isn't going to left hand turn into another car (well... you hope they wont). so block with the handy car going straight through the intersection. use the other cars as shields.

If you don't already own a copy, I suggest writing down Proficient Motorcycling: The Ultimate Guide to Riding Well on your Christmas wish list. There's a whole chapter on urban survival tactics and he spends a good deal discussing intersections. The rest of the book is packed full of useful knowledge that you can put to immediate use on the street and use forever. I read certain sections every spring to brush up before going out for battle. It should be on every motorcyclist's book shelf in my opinion.

I just went to a high-visibility yellow helmet and jacket, and the improvement is observable in drivers' faces. It clashes with my bike, but who cares if it helps them see me better?

Never EVER be passive. Loud pipes and all that other passive "bravo sierra" stuff--counting on someone else's actions to keep you safe--will get you hurt or killed or worse. Be the aggressor, and do your best to own the road in a legal manner. Constant shuckin' and jivin' and ropadopin' is the order of the day. If you like cruisin' you are probably cruisin' towards a bruisin'. All my humble opinion of course.
FWIW, FNG PS--I'm new to bikes but not to the road.

Oh, and here is a statistical fact to keep in mind. The OVERWHELMING majority of accidents that occur at intersections involve either the first vehicle in or the last vehicle out. Try to avoid those slots and you are going to be statistically better off!

Though rope a doping is the offering of a feigned defensiveness when in actuality it is an offensive strategy.
