Maybe take the corner a little slower? In the test they are looking for safe riding first and skills second in my opinion

During my testing I will be running a fair bit slower I just want to figure out why my mate on his Yammy 900 doesnt seem to lean as much yet corners tighter than i do
Maybe its my mind telling me that im right over yet im not.... I have scuffed the tyre to within about 10mm of the sidewall. Is that about right? |

What training have you taken, is there an MSF-like course to learn the basics? There is no "right amount" to lean. You just need to steer the bike enough to keep it following exactly the lines that you want it to take. Is countersteering a familiar concept yet? Push left to go left? Check out the sticky threads in the Riding Skills section, there are a couple good links to decent videos and even some books that can set you in the right direction.

Have been taking lessons from a private school but its mainly on stuff i need to pss the test. I am confident riding and I think Im pretty good but just some o the technical stuff escapes me atm.
I am comfortable with the countersteering tho... Cheers for the advice Alex 10mm is just under half an inch |

lol Jiggles!!!!
If your friend is cornering tighter than you with less lean angle then ask him/her about their body position vs. yours.

First thought is you are starting your turn in too soon (I do it on lefts myself still). Takes practice and time to get it like your buddy, don't rush yourself.

He gave me some advice that while I'm not sure how practical it is in terms of physics, I haven't had an issue since I've started doing it. He told me that when I go into turns, to leave the bike at higher RPMs to prevent going wide and drifting into oncoming traffic. Since I figured I'd be an ugly hood ornament, I'd give it a shot and it seems to work. Obviously you'll want to check with the more experienced riders here to see if this is good advice or not, but the weekend after he told me this we went up to "blood mountain" and I didn't have any issues with cornering. |

Interesting bit of advice when put that way. Did he tell you why? I mean this is of importance when on bigger bikes as to much throttle can throw you wide, especially liter bikes. And on our 250's keeping it in the higher rpms is where the power is but not quite sure why he told you that.

if you are going wide, turn your head more into the turn. it sounds like to me you are not looking through the corner far enough and when you see yourself go wide you straighten your head out and maybe target fixate on where you are going instead of looking through the corner

I took my class about two months ago, just be perceptive to what the instructors are saying (If you're taking a class), be calm. If you have an idea about how to get around with the clutch, you're probably better off than most of the people in your class. (In my case anyways)
You might be able to look up the state course, and see what's required in it. My whole license course was on youtube haha. |

That alone don't seem right to me. He must be taking other factors of your riding into account.

That's a possibility, but he didn't seem to imply that.
Like I said, I haven't had issues since so I may have self-corrected something else without realizing it as I got more comfortable on the bike. Who knows?heh |

I think I can help you cuz I just took the test and it's still fresh in my mind (and got a perfect score on it) =) last saturday and sunday. Practice being smooth with the clutch and smooth shifiting. Practice quick stops which include front and rear break along with squeezing the clutch and downshifting to first all at the same time. You can do all this in some type of parking lot. Practice CLUTCH CONTROL. The most important thing. Practice figure eights in a small area. Also practice when making turns (the reason your messing up) TURN THAT HEAD. It really does help more then you might think. Make sure your not looking at the ground in front of you but what's ahead and use your peripheral vision to do the rest.
My test consisted of first figure 8 and then quick swerve to avoid an obstacle (so easy) and then it was quick stop. The 4th part was going around a turn, switching to 2nd, accelerating to 20 mph, slowing down to a good speed for the turn. (start outside, then cut inside then accelerate outside) and that's it. Hope that helped cuz that took a while to type lol

I just overcame running wide in the corners. I went over the yellow lines twice and even though I didn't have a close call with oncoming traffic it still shook me up.
I couldn't figure out what was wrong. I was leaning, I was looking through the turn. Then I caught myself.. I was not leaning with the bike. My arm pushing into the corner would straighten up pushing my body away from the corner. Since then I have leaned with the bike and have no fear or worry that I will run wide on the corners and have been having a lot of fun. |
