Just bought a 250! (pics)

Just bought my first bike ever, I spent $1,200. The bike is an 03 Ninja 250 with 2,900 miles
PICTURES!!

Okay, I'm going to start with the bad..

First off the bike had been clearly dropped a few times... It has a busted foot peg, the front brake lever has a chip missing and a few misc cracks around the bike..

Foot Peg

scraped paint

missing cap

Gas tank- Is it just me or is the gas tank look weird?

If any of you have a PDF version of the manual that would be awesome!
If not, then I need some help..

I need some information on what oil filter to use, what type of oil and the oil capacity (I searched but couldn't find much on it.)

Also the bike has a little bit of hesitation with the throttle, I think it needs new spark plugs (I already replaced the battery).

I also plan to replace the fuel filter, air filter, I think I may need new tires, right now I am rolling with Dunlop K630's in the front and rear.

Anyway, I mainly plan to just fix some of the broken stuff and get the engine all nice and fresh with the oil change and filter fixes, etc. Also the Gas seems kind of old so I am going to do a drain and fill.

Thanks everyone in advanced for your help

Congrats, Danny! My Ninjette is exactly the same color scheme.

2 quarts (plus a tiny bit, maybe) of oil, 10W40 or 20W50 viscosity. Most of the folks like the Shell Rotella oil intended for diesel engines. Fram CH6012 oil filter, but some folks don't like Fram.

Nice find! Looks OK in the pics. Levers aren't too expensive. You should give it a once-over, checking the valve clearance, timing, plugs, air filter, oil, chain, brakes, cables, etc. Lots of good info on http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki.

Thanks for all the replies everyone!
- I did the oil change, I went with some motorcycle specific oil (I forget brand) but it was a 10W40.
- I did change the battery with a brand new one.
- I checked the filter and it seemed okay, kinda flimsy though being just that little foam piece... Considering upgrading to a K&N in the future.
- I just ordered new spark plugs. I went with NGK (I'm a big fan of NGK). I haven't checked the old ones yet, but I wanted to start new and they were only $5 for both.
- I drained all the old gas (bike had been sitting all winter) and replaced with new. I threw premium in there, only cost me about $1 more for 2 gallons and I think it helped a tiny bit (maybe, who knows).

The Bike doesn't like it when it is cold. It will over stall out even in neutral. I have to keep the choke on and let it warm up, I'm sure this is normal for an 11 year old bike that sits in the winter.

My plans are to get some good gear, I just bought a Joe Rocket jacket on amazon. Cost me over $130 but I think it is a good investment.

Thanks again everyone for the warm welcome

South Shore rocks! Best roads, best beaches, best girls and closer to Florida than the North Shore.

@cowboy - Yeah I like the south shore, do you know any good motorcycle shops down here so I can buy some gear? I've been looking everywhere. Hopefully I will be able to pick up some girls this summer on the bike.
@N-m - Thanks!
