brand new '11 SE for $3399?

http://chicago.craigslist.org/wcl/mcy/3262499239.html

What are your thoughts on this? I don't know if it's sketchy or what, but the price seems reasonable. If it were from a dealer, the price would be through the roof especially with Cook County sales tax. He's got the title in hand and it's about an hour away from home.

Looks like a nice bike! Make sure he's got a clean title and proceed with caution though!

I don't really know anything about the break-in process, though. I think that's what worries me most about buying Used from a private party.

With 270 miles, you'd be the one breaking it in :P

^figured that might be true

http://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/mcy/3260750959.html

this one is only 30 minutes away.

What's the worst if it is broken-in improperly?

First red light is the mileage on it at 270.
It has probably sat for awhile and will need the carbs removed and cleaned at least.
It will probably need an oil change and probably coolant system flush/change.
Look for signs of dry rot on tires, not sure if it will set in a short amount of time it has probably sat, or signs of a flat spot, from where it sat in same spot of tire for weeks on end. If either or those show signs, you'll want to replace them asap.

Also out of curiosity I would ask why they purchased it and after only 270 miles parked it.
My first thought is they crashed it, had whatever parts replaced under Insurance and then parked it to afraid to ride anymore. Which if so, and they only replaced cosmetic damage, it may have unseen issues still.

Their story as to why it got parked may/may not reinforce my thoughts.
It's always best to ask, and trust your gut if you believe it or not.

EsrTek's comments do seem like a worst case scenario.....some or most of those things may be true.

I like to casually ask the previous owner if they know what the break-in process is. If they don't know, I would move on to a diff bike.

And of the two you've posted from CL, I'd personally be more drawn to the one in Univ Village. Completely stock, a few more miles, and a more knowledgeable owner / CL ad.

Break in on a 250 = ridiculous

Stop worrying about it

I got my 09 in Chicago for 3,300 with 500 miles. That deal seems similar to what I got.

Also I got quotes from maybe 2-3 Chicagoland dealers for brand new 2010s for about 4300 OTD at the time, so that guy might not be taking that big of a hit if he got a good deal on it.

It is so ****ing worth it to ride out to the middle of this country just to get a reasonably priced 250. Man I should start importing them to cali, I'll be a goddamn millionaire

Obviously ask some questions, but I don't think you should be too worried as long as it has a clean title. I bought mine this past spring, a 2010 with 120 miles on it for $2500 and it has has been absolutely perfect. I say go for it.

If you can ride, you can break in.
Just varies the rev really...

At 270 miles, this bike still has the second tank of gas in it.

You can always buy my Ninja and help a fellow forum member out! I can guarantee it was broken in and maintained properly!

Anyways enough self advertising, both those bikes look clean, based on the pictures doesn't seem like there any sorts of exterior damage. Seeing it in person would definitely be able to tell you how well it was maintained.
