Are You Multilingual?
Language is the bridge in closing the communication gap between us and other people throughout the continents. Some are gifted in having the ability to adept and to learn other languages and be fluent as their own mother tongue.
What languages do you speak? Is there a tale behind it? Let me start first : I can speak English, Malay, Arabic (beginner), Malaysia Sign Language (signing for the deaf). I learnt English since it is the second official language in Malaysia (lol..). Malay as it is my mother tongue. Arabic since it is a compulsory language for my previous minor course in University. Malaysian Sign Language since I got hooked up with a TV series from Japan called "Aishiteru To Ittekure" (tell me that you love me); which the series is about a deaf guy falling in love with a girl which can speak. The way the girl signed had me interested to learn the language, but once I enrolled to the sign language class I found out that the Malaysian sign language VARY significantly from the Japanese sign language.. hahahaha. However it is similar to the American Sign Language. I am currently learning online on Xhosa language. I found the language is very interesting. What about you?

I know bits of Spanish and French, and husband and I are working on learning American Sign Language. It's funny that I could go to France and be understood more or less by the deaf community, better than by the hearing since ASL is based on French sign language and my spoken French is kind of sad.
I need to read foreign-language newspapers or something. |

Other than English, I'm proficient in Morse Code, and poor with Spanish. I try to improve my Spanish when someone good at it is willing to have an entry level conversation with me. Morse Code was fascinating to learn, and when I was getting good at it, I remember listening to a conversation, and realizing that without even thinking about it, it felt like I was actually hearing English being spoken.
One problem is that if one lives in the US, there is really no pressing need to know another language. In other countries, English is often used as a universal language, so people there often tend to learn English. When I was in Japan, most people in Tokyo could speak English well enough to have a conversation with me. In smaller towns, it was less likely, but I could always write down what I wanted to say, the the Japanese person would be able to understand that. I manufacture and sell ignition units and other electronics for old motorcycles, primarily the Kawasaki triples. Half of my sales are overseas, and most email orders I get are quite well written. When a customer apologizes for his poor English skills, I always compliment him on knowing English better than I know his language. |

Simple answer, no.
But, reminds me of one of my favorite "intelligent" jokes: Q: What do you call someone who speaks 3 languages? A: Tri-lingual Q: What do you call someone who speaks 2 languages? A: Bilingual Q: What do you call someone who speaks one language? A: (scroll) A: American! |

I think this language is VERY important for us to learn. It may be used in dire situations such as during war or when we are left with no other telephony devices. Quote:

In Mexican Spanish, often "Uhm Poco" (Poko rhyming with loco)
Morse Code can also be fun in a social environment when another person there is proficient. You can whistle or tap to the other person in complete privacy. Last futzed with by Triple Jim; March 14th, 2017 at 07:00 AM. |
