I used to ride year-round in Toronto and you definitely want/need a balaclava and winter gloves with a separate glove liner. Even then, my hands were the first to suffer.

Other than that I just layered up and did arm exercises every time I'd stop at a light .

Gerbing heated glove liners w/ somewhat insulated goretex gloves
Freeze-out neck guard
Wool socks

Plus some combination of the following layers depending on how cold it is:
Thermal shirt
Windbreaker under the jacket or waterproof rain overjacket
Under-armour

heated gear

Every year I ride what bike I have at the time to Daytona Bike Week. Usually its a BMW but one year it was a Hayabusa, another year a 250 Ninja. I live in NE Ohio and before they moved Bike week to second week in March I used to leave in the 20's last day of February. I have had Gerbing heated gear since I don't know when. Gloves, Jacket, pants and socks all connect together into a heat troller thermostat. Expensive at first but over the long haul worth every penny. You cannot believe at what risk you put your self through when get your body core cold. Before heated gear I've literally stood in the shower soaking the hot water into me warming up my core. Nice thing about heated gear you can take it from bike to bike unlike heated grips. The new ribbon wire in the Gerbing liners makes them excellent to wear while driving car (unheated) then pull on your gloves over them and plug in. Wardie

I am into winter sports

So I wear my snowmobiling gear for serious rides an serious cold
Castle jacket
Castle pants or overalls
Baclava
Snowmobiling cloves with built in ice scraper
Snowmobile helmet with double lens or heated lens
It comes with a breath box also- vents humid air out
Wool socks- the kind hunters wear
- I don't wear my snowmobile boots
They are just to bulky
I use my rain proof ridding boots with hot hands brand foot waters

For chilly non Rainey or snow days
I wear my snow boarding gear over street cloths
Or an insulated leather . Neck guard or baclava

This is an awesome thread....

+1 for heated grips and heated glove liners, both work well. I might use both this year..

I want to try a battery powered (not bike powered) heated vest, and snowmobile suit...

Found this morning, my current (well vented) gear is not good for >50*!!!
I can't afford a new 1st gear winter suit, to replace the one that got ruined.

I need to find something that is not as bulky as snowmobile gear...the KLIM boots I bought last yr..while awesome for warmth, are too bulky even for a snowmobile!
So back to ground 0 on winter gear and won't be able to get new until income taxes.

I really want to find something warm as my suit/boots but no more bulky than normal gear would be.
Any suggestions I'm all ears...

I bought the Hot Hands hand warmers, plus I have my little Joe Rocket gloves, and the Olympic all-weather recommended by Teri. They are a bit too big, but they fit perfectly over my Joe Rockets, so I'll have three layers of gloves on my hands on these dark cold mornings ahead!

I got a nice balaclava too. Bring on winter!

The SV650 should be able to handle a heated vest (approximately 30 watts) with no problem. I something else going on with your charging system?

I tried the nifty little Hot Hands product today. Those things are really neat! My hands stayed nice and warm in my Olympia gloves with a hot hand inside. This was the chilliest commute so far this year...low 50s. Here comes fall, ready or not!

how cold is cold? cannot imagine Georgia gets as cold as South Dakota. Heated grips is a first step, snow board pants and jacket, insulated gloves and a neck warmer.

I just bought this

http://midwestworkwear.com/Venture-H...X_WhoCCXXw_wcB

I got it for $100 from work. I don't know if it's really worth $160 or if there is something cheaper that does the same thing.

I have just worn it once, and not while riding. It's not been cold enough here yet. But it's AWESOME. It lasts 2.5hrs on full heat which I think is 135 degrees. It has well-placed heating panels. the XS is a little too big for me, but I think it would be fairly size-accurate if you order what you usually wear. Can't wait to wear it when it gets chilly.

AND HEATED GRIPS

I'm in PA and we get cold weather I rode 4 seasons until I started carpooling with a coworker for my 50 mile each way commute, but when I did ride 4 seasons I have a heated base layer shirt got on amazon, this thing rocks little battery pack with 3 temp settings Warm, Hot, and Dam it Hott. I have a heavy leather winter jacket. Waterproof Over Pants with winter liner, Thick Socks, Waterproof boots, Bacalava, heated glove liners with waterproof gloves, heated grips, and a pinlock face shield.

All of the stuff I got for the cheap on eBay and Amazon so I don't really have brand names, but I've ridden in everything from 5-112 degrees F. My cut off is 20 Degrees F I'll still ride but I would rather take a car or carpool with my coworker.

It regularly dips below 30, and at times we have lows in the teens. Our highs can range from mid-30s to (more normally), mid-50s. I know our winters are mild compared to others, but no one can argue that 20s aren't a bit chilly on a bike.
