See, now DuctTape has it right. Make the same product but in a crap ton of colors and designs. I love that display at the hardware store. You can just stand there and go "Hurm, what can I make out of all of that?!"

I had the glow in the dark tape on my rims until I decided to just go with Krylon.

Saw that aisle at Sears, when I was picking up some tools and yeah they are cheap looking. These types of stereotypes and or social constructs are advertised everywhere and subliminally, even things like motorcycle gear. From the lack of availability in choices that are geared toward women riders, to the pink color on gear and how it's advertised toward women, flower scroll designs, etc. It gets annoying, especially when you want good quality gear and realize you don't have much of a choice. It would be nice if there was more of a balance in these matters, but c'est la vie.

CycleGear isn't shy about it. Nothing subliminal here. It's pretty obvious what they think of women from the fact that when you click on the Women's section on their site, you're greeted with a button that says "Well-Protected Passenger"

Yep, but I was speaking of other things besides gear too, general advertisement and marketing industries as well. That's a whole other topic though.

that's probably a valid business strategy unfortunately. they know their sales statistics. going into any cyclegear, its rare to see female riders. probably because their stock for lady-sized gear is crap though. so i guess its probably skewed.

Yeah, I've felt the sting of lack of gear too many times. For some reason, it's even more heavily skewed when you look at race/street boots and race/street gloves. Like this for boots on revzilla:

And only one of those 4 has any lateral protection worth a damn. That's it. Wanna do track days? Wanna race? Serious about your leg protection? Hope you like this boot. Just this one, right here. No others. Also all colorways come with ~flowery swirlies~.

Some women can use men's boots and gloves, but you are completely, utterly SOL if you're small like me. I really wanted a pair of Racer R-Safes

It does come in a "dominatrix-esque shiny black leather with pink swirls" color, yes.

Eh, one rabbit strike while wearing those takes care of ANY shiny bits that may have escaped the regular dust and dirt of road use. Least I have zero desire to touch the outside of my boot ever again.

And they now live in the garage.

But I have the Cobra, standard ol black.

If being pink was the one thing holding back any girl from using tools then they probably shouldn't be using a tool to begin with. With that said I constantly encourage my GF to use tools. I got her to use a Dremel a few months back for the first time and she had a blast sending sparks across the room. She was having so much fun that I got the camera out and took a few pics.

The Sidi Vertigo Lei's! I have these boots in black with the white scroll work. They're fantastic! Not very comfortable to walk around in for more than a short distance, but they're wonderful on the bike.

Not at all, it's just that most of women's gear doesn't have the choice to not have swirls/pink if you don't want them. Astars anouke for example.

Yeah, they're pretty great! They seem to have a ton of space in the heel area for some reason, but a heel lift fixes that.

The Vertigos are nice and all, but another significant point, aside from the stupid swirls they put on the women's version, is that the protection level is nothing compared to the Sidi Vortices, which they don't make in women's sizes.

Fortunately for myself, I fit small mens sizes when it comes to getting a high end pair of race gloves or boots, but having to get a new suit lately and wanting even some of the barebones features they put in men's suits (Back hump? Full perforation? For a girl? L.O.L.) was not an easy task. I ended up importing a spidi suit from italy just because the custom suit makers I talked to struggled a lot with tailoring for women, and Spidi offered more features than Dainese.

Put me also in the fed up with gender roles in marketing camp <_<

I keep hoping they'll put out a women's version of the vortice every season, but no luck so far. "Hey, I know you wanna ride and all, but no matter what you'll be less protected than a guy! Lol, better hope you don't crash!"

I'm a 4.5 in men's sizing

I think the worst part is that you can't do anything about it. It's not like politics where you can write to a congressman/woman, or try to drum up social support. You just have to sit there and hope some higher-up in the company gets the bright idea to expand their paltry offerings for women.

4.5!?! You need a ladder to reach the counter tops?

That's why I keep buying A* boots since they go so small. I would love a pair of Sidis but the smallest size of the best models are all a size too big.

I'm actually the exact average height for a woman in the US - 5'4", so that's not too bad. It's just that my hands and feet are teeeeeny. I got an XS mens dainese glove and it's still too roomy for me.

That's another point, women's versions of certain gear give less protection over men's. Falling down, hurts, regardless of gender/sex, etc. Take for example the Dainese Avant race boots, hardly any protection compared to something like Dainese Torque Pro Out, which I wear. I really want to try some Daytona's. Luckily, I don't have issues in the sizing department, it's just the choices.

I bought a very small Japan size mans 2 PCs. Taichi leathers are small, so I have great protection. Gloves are astar Stella, not as good as men's. I am a 38 men's shoe soooo no luck there either.

"Jewish American Princess" might be pains in the ass but I don't think calling them that is racist!
