Spilled GAS on my Tank!!!

I stopped to get gas the other day afterwork. As i was putting the gas nozzle into the tank, some dripped out and onto my gas tank!!! * I didnt even squeeze the trigger yet *

Thank GOD it was only a Silver dollar size amount... the Clear coat is alil' DULL looking now in that spot.

When i got home some 20 mins later, i busted out the garden hose and let cold water flow/flush over the spot for a good 10mins

Anyone else do this?

Any Issues with your clear coat?

What did you use to resurface the clear coat spot affected?

Wash, wax, done.

The paint is pretty resiliant.

I spilt tons of gas all over the tank, always ended up being shiny at the end of the day,

yep, wash and wax that area. I always thought paint was resilient enough until I ended up with gas caught in the overflow area surrounding the gas cap area. The gas sat there for a number of days and lifted the paint right off the metal!

Since then, I'm a lot more cautious about how long I leave gas sitting on painted surfaces.

Happens on occassion with me at the gas station. I just grab some paper towel that is used for oil level checks, wet it with some windshield washer fluid and use this to clean up the fuel. Works like a charm.

I fuel up while sitting on the bike, I've always made it a habit of keeping the fuel nozzle turned up when it's near the bike and with one fluid motion rotating it down and into the tank to prevent any fuel from getting on the bike... saves the wax job...

I always use a couple of paper towels covering the nozzle as I put it across my tank and as I pull it back out it eases my mind about the potential problems. I know some gass stations dont always keep paper towels out there I just dont use those gas stations.

This happened to me too! If I even drip a tiny bit on the gas tank now I wipe it off right away.

Whenever I get some "spillage", I just grab the squeegee, soap it up real good, and use it to wash the top of my tank (maybe the mirrors and headlight, too). When I'm done I put it back in the "bucket" and soap it up again (to clean it for the next guy), then I grab a couple of paper towels to dry the bike (gently!).

Sometimes I wipe it off with those blue paper towels they're SPOSED to have near the pumps. Sometimes I just let it dry.

While I'm sure you have the misguided notion your purile posts are actually humorous, what meaning do you expect your delusionally self-important statements of unknowing, questionably experienced opinion will have with us? What fantasy do you hold that would make you believe that your tiny-fisted tantrums have any credibility beyond ridiculous and obnoxious.

What you are spouting on about is MYTH, nothing more, put in the same category as using a cell phone while refueling. Motorcycle fuel tank overflows and explosions don't happen, find one example... we'll wait...

In 33 years of motorcycling I've never overfilled a tank and dumped fuel all over the engine and my crotch and with the exception of my 2007 Yamaha VMax with its fuel tank UNDER THE SEAT which required you to get off the bike, I've always refueled the same way.

If your eye/hand coordination is so poor that you're incapable of sitting on a motorcycle and refueling without spilling fuel all over yourself and the engine perhaps you should consider that motorcycling may be too complicated for you and you should pursue other interests.

With all the things you actually need to worry about while riding a motorcycle, this 'issue' is pretty much at the bottom of the list. In the end, if the overflow and explosion myth were true, what's the difference: Getting blown to pieces and burnt to a crisp sitting on a bike while refueling or getting blown in half and cremated while standing next to it?

Calm down Daryyl, though I do agree he presented his message in the form of childish banter, he does have a point. It probably isn't a good idea to test fate, ironic as that sounds coming from a motorcycle rider on a bike forum.

I dont lick the tank, i take my helmet off and snort it and let the vapors evaporate in my lungs so i get high. Then I ride out of the gas station and enter the public streets with blurred vision and no sense of balance. Fun times

1. Pour remaining gas from nozzle onto the ground.

2. Light puddle of gas with cigarette lighter.

3. Bow to the gas Gods.

4. Light cigarette on the flames.

5. Fill bike.

Or you can just skip 2 thru 4 if you want to, the gas gods won't mind.

Even if you don't self-immolate yourself filling the tank while sitting on the bike, it's still a stupid thing to do. You're already handling flammable materials and I don't think it's the safest thing to do to balance a 300-400lb bike between your legs while you do it.
Aside from the obvious common sense violation, if someone else starts a fire or the Halon fire suppression system triggers unexpectedly without a fire (as happened at my local gas station last week) you have to either get off, drop the bike and run or get off, put down the kickstand and run. Either scenario exposes you to potential harm from fire and chemicals longer than if you could just RUN. There are also many cases of people crashing into gas stations. If you're sitting on a bike you can't jump out of the way anywhere near as fast as you could standing next to the bike.
Crazy **** like this happens. Not giving yourself the optimum chance if a split-second escape were warranted because of fire or accident is not intelligent behavior.

I've gotten angry as service stations with no paper towels for this reason. There are some chronic offenders here.

It would be so easy to respond to you, but the sad truth is that you wouldn't understand me. Forty million sperm in the average ejaculation and you were the quickest? If bricks were brains you’d be homeless. Like a sore that won’t go away, you sit in front of your computer and continue to try and impress with your mental masturbation, I’ll be out riding…

Darryl - lighten up. Your first reply addressed a whole bunch of things that nobody but you spouted. Nobody believes you're going to spontaneously combust, nobody believes what you're doing is terribly unsafe, but many people think it's just silly. And it's fun to poke fun at things people think are silly, especially if it sets someone off as it did you.

Take your own advice and go for a ride, works wonders for all of us.

Alex, just LOCK this thread!

I was just looking for afew 2cents of what products or such to use on the gas tanks clear coat, also IF the gas will EAT the clear coat too easy If left alone!

Seems like clear coat will be ok. This wasnt a OP about how your supposed to pour gas from the nozzle into your tank.

I'm always careful and it just happened to spill on the paint alil that day.

I cant remb, maybe a hottie was bending over outta her SUV next to me and i started pouring... :hehe:

anyhow, i now have 3M scotchguard paint protection film shipping to me.

Ill be covering the Gas tank with this stuff, so it should help in the future with gas also keep my tank bag from scuffin' the tank up more then it is!
