Newbie from south florida

Hey there everyone. I'm a new ninja owner and a very new rider. Got my ninja 300 in November and it's my very first bike. I have just over 400 miles on it and I'm loving it. Still have lots to learn and consider every ride practice at this point.

I'm wondering if there are other riders from south florida (broward, palm beach)? It seems as though much of the riders down here are on super sports; which I'm not knocking, just don't think they're my kind of rider at this point.

Anyway, glad to be here and looking forward to learning lots!

Thanks for the welcome! I've been reading some interesting posts here the last few days. Lots of good info.

I hope to find some riders down here. I don't mind riding alone but it would be nice to hook up with some people occasionally.

Welcome, here are just a few things to think about,

1.Get trained and licensed MSF Courses

2.ALWAYS Wear protective gear -- ATGATT All The Gear, All The Time -- including a helmet manufactured to the standards set by a government agency.

3.ALWAYS Ride unimpaired by alcohol or other drugs

4.ALWAYS Ride within your own skill limits

5.Be a lifelong learner by taking refresher rider courses, and advanced rider course A.R.C*

Yep, I took and passed the MSF course, so I'm licensed. Yes, I went to the DMV and got it added to my license
I am an ATGATT person; boots, gloves, pants, jacket, full face helmet.
I'm not a drinker so no problems there.
I am certainly riding within my limits...always.
As I said in my first post, every ride is practice...and I should add, a learning experience.

One of the things to remember, and a lot new riders don't, is riding within your limits, some motorcycle accidents are what they call single vehicle accident, which means it's just the motorcycle itself.

Try avoiding heavy traffic, night riding and sunrise/sunset hours as much as possible.

I strongly recommend you reading these two books:
"Proficient Motorcycling: The Ultimate Guide to Riding Well" by David L. Hough

"Ride Hard, Ride Smart: Ultimate Street Strategies for Advanced Motorcyclists" by Pat Hahn

Both are available at your closest public library:

If you don't have one, apply for a member's card and place a hold on them.

You can also find valuable information in our Riding Skill section.

Find an empty and clean parking lot and practice emergency braking and emergency swerving at least once a week.

When you feel ready for your first track day, read "A Twist of the Wrist 2" by Keith Code (also available at the library) and then visit this local organization:

I'm in Jupiter. I rode with groups when I first started riding but got tired of it after a while. Most have high displacement bikes and on the mostly boring straight roads here, they tend to want to go fast so I had a hard time keeping up. In a straight line the Ninjette is no match for the big bikes when they decide to go fast.

The other obvious thing which was already mentioned is ride your own ride. Don't feel pressure to go faster than you're comfortable with. Also, don't forget to have fun. I ride to work when the weather is nice and I ride on early weekend mornings when it's not too hot and not a lot of traffic.

Longest trip I did was around lake O with a bunch of coworkers and some of their friends. Nice easy pace as we had a mixture riders and types of bikes.

Yep, my rule right now is never at night and absolutely never during rush hour traffic. I'm a weekend rider, mostly in the morning, maybe late afternoon. If in the morning, I'm usually out by 9-ish and home by 11-ish. If I want to sleep in, I go out at about 3:30 and ride in low traffic neighborhoods. Then I'm usually home by 5-ish.

I've watched the videos on twist of the wrist and lots of you tube videos. I've also perused the riding skills section here and plan to continue reading those threads. Sadly, I absolutely despise reading so reading books is not my cup of tea.

My first month of riding was spent in a parking lot practicing my starts, stops, turns, etc. then I moved into riding in the neighborhood across the street from me (I don't have to ride any major streets, my street is a dead end and the neighborhood is across the street). It has stops, turns, and straight away that I can get into fourth gear on so it's nice. Now, before I go out on the "real" streets, I always warm up in that neighborhood for about 15 minutes.

For what it's worth, I never intend on getting on 95, the sawgrass nor the turnpike. At least now, my mentality is...if something's going to happen I'd rather it happen at 45 mph than 65-75mph. Also, no track days for me...just can't picture myself doing that.

See, that's the problem finding riders down here; they all have super sports and ride way out of my comfort zone. Therefore, I don't even bother to suggest riding because it's not my ride.

I'm an early weekend rider also so if you ever want to meet up, let me know. I know Jupiter is a bit of a hike but maybe we can meet somewhere in the middle on 441 or something.
