How to reset the odometer?

I replaced my speedo cluster with another one because the fuel gauge no longer worked but the mileage on the new one is double the mileage of the original one, how do I set back to lower mileage? thanks

Pretty sure tampering with an odometer is illegal... I think in these cases it's just something to be noted for records.

Yep, rolling back the odometer is illegal.

Though the fuel gauge is separate from the speedo/odometer, is there a way to just install the fuel one? I've seen them for sale individually on ebay.

Oh... didn't know I could replace the fuel gauge alone. Anyway I sold the original one already and replaced with the used one, is there a way I can roll back the mileage? I don't really care up here in Canada, I am gonna keep the bike for myself anyway

Some criminally minded people would detach the cable from the wheel and use a drill attached to the cable to spin it backwards and roll back the clock.

But I do not suggest you do this.

If you're just keeping if for yourself, why worry about it? Just write down the original mileage when you changed it out and what the current odometer started at. Should be all you need whether you're keeping track of maintenance or selling the bike down the road anyway.

They don't spin backwards. Just roll the front wheel backwards to confirm. You'd need to run the drill quite awhile to roll the odo over and back to 0.

You should be able to get in there and manually reset the individual numbers. Never tried on the Ninja but the odometer is no different than most.

That's a bit of a shame, the older mechanical odo's you used to be able to wind backwards as they're just a gear train with an incredibly small reduction ratio, set them on a bench with a drill and leave for x number of days / weeks.

Mmmmmm don't know. If you can get inside the gauge cluster it will.

get really aquainted with the assembly and grab a very good new set of needle nose plyers and pull the pin hodling the wheels. I saw it done in the mecedes dealer when replacing the odometer witha factory replacemetn one, so it reflects current mileage. Nothing wrong with doing it imo. Of course pulling the pin may cause your odo to grenade itself.

+1 just leave it alone since there's no reason to change the odo numbers. A benefit to this is you can claim more riding experience than you actually have.

And if you do change the odo and decide to sell it down the road later on, the likely scenarios are
1. You inform the buyer but have no receipt from a dealer or the original odo to prove mileage which makes it suspicious.
2. Just be an ass and don't tell any one.

I would've just kept the original cluster to be honest if the only thing that wasn't working was the fuel gauge. Even when it works, it doesn't work. It's about as accurate as trying to piss on a bullseye against the wind. Just fill up before 300 kms and you'll be fine.

Don't hook up the cable.

Ride for the same amount of time you owned the bike before you swapped. Chances are you follow a pattern in your riding, so the mileage over time will be close.

Then hook it up. The mileage should be close enough.

You don't really care about the speed, right? Just ride at the pace of traffic.

But how do you get the speedo without plugging the cable? It would be nice to know my speed so I am not speeding right lol

A little info on this I just attempted to do this with the parts bike odometer and every single wheel is locked in tight and it's made out of stronger metal then the frame of the bike.

just undo the speedo hose from the wheel end, and pull out the cable from the rubber hose. then reattach the hose to the wheel end, with the cable wire left out. ride for a while until you think the miles will match, and then reinstall the cable, and your done. easy.

I know there are specificaly licensed shops that can set your new odometer to the same number as your old one legally. But I'm almost positive you require your old Odometer.

Though you do have to give your mileage when you get your plate sticker. You could always give your local dealer a call if they know a reputable shop that can adjust it legally.

Otherwise, the black electrical tape method is your best bet.
