ninja 250 engine swap
Hi.
I am looking to replace the engine on my bike. I want to replace it with a ex500. What parts are needed. I have a shop willing to do it but they dont know which parts are needed. Would a 650 make more sense then he 500? Thank you for reading my post. |

There are a few threads on the 500 job. The 650 is not really an easy option because of the design of the throttle bodies leading to an airbox above the engine on the 650R. 500 would be the way to go if you want to pursue. I think someone needs to try a 450 single lol.

Just replace the entire Ninja 250 with an EX500.
It will be easier/quicker/cheaper/better. There are all sorts of challenges involved, things need to be modified and fabricated. If you are paying someone to do it the cost will quickly get out of hand. Just sayin. |

I agree, just get an EX500, or if your just want more power, get a 600, and be done with it, and save your money, and aggravation.
The frame on the Ninjette is not strong, and flexes enough with just the stock motor.

I think some of you might have misread my original post. Just to clarify, i am not interested in purchasing a new motorcycle. I am interested in an engine swap. I have also stated that i have a shop willing to do it, so cost will not be a problem for me.

Personally I'd like to see the ninja 650 engine complete with EFI and all the bells and whistles.

It is going to be cheaper and easier to just buy a 500 or 600 than to do the engine swap, but bike projects aren't always about what is cheap or easy. Make sure you post pictures of the project. Have fun. |

Stuffing a bigger engine in the 250 isn't a great idea in my mind. The chassis and brakes aren't exactly overbuilt. A swap can be done, but usually it's done by someone with fabrication experience or an interest in learning to fabricate. As you say, if the shop is asking for a list of parts (and probably part numbers) to do the work you may not have the right shop. |
