Cops leaving motorcyclists alone
Had an argument with my brother, he used to ride a CBR600 and he said he would fly by cops going 150 MPH and they wouldn't even bother him. He tried to tell me that the reason was that cops don't really care about bikes and will 9 times out of 10 leave them alone (they do go after bikes but not as often as cars). He said that the few times they went after him he just would run away and he never got caught. (He's really stupid and lucky).
I think that is bull----. I feel like cops don't care what you are riding they will pull you over... So here's where my argument becomes your business (lol). What do you guy's think? Do you believe that cops are more lenient to bikes? I only have 300 miles under my belt where as my brother has over 50,000 so he likes to use that argument... But I know a lot of you have more than 50k so what's your opinion?

I can give you the names of a few folks who can definitely verify that cops do indeed care how fast you're going on a motorcycle. Even in the middle of no where with no one else around, they care.

If they think it's going to turn into a high speed chase, they're less likely to bother. Protocol is to drop pursuit if giving chase will only make the situation more dangerous. Basically, it would turn a single joyrider (that will eventually slow down) into an ongoing, frantic movement of a single rider and a couple tons of car trying to keep up with him. If the joyrider crashes, especially on the highway, he's likely to be the only casualty.
With that said, I would not attempt this on a ninjette. A cop can keep up with you. If he's got a keen eye and ear for motorcycles, he will know you're riding two wheeled lawnmower. One didn't hesitate to come after me when I was going 95mph.

Wow those responses were fast.
Thanks everyone, I agree with you. Especially Ninja bob. I see what you are saying that they sometimes let it go out of laziness. My ninja couldn't even go that fast... I think my ninja would top out at somewhere around the 100 MPH mark, which I really don't think I will go near any time soon. ---- I guess the point he was trying to make though, is that if a car was going 100 MPH and flew by a cop, the chances of the cop going after him are nearly 100% where as a bike it would be much, much lower... I agree it would be lower, but I still think you're playing with fire. And as for him being an idiot, I love him, but he is an idiot. I remember watching him flying by doing wheelies going 80+ Mph, he claims he's done them going much faster too. He doesn't ride anymore though, after totaling his bike (big surprise).

I think it depends on where you live. In Memphis I feel that bikes get away with alot more than cars do.
The cops around here are busy with real criminals. |

Cops now have radios and they love to impound bikes if you go 20MPH over the limit.

Top speed of a Crown Victoria Police Interceptor is 120mph with the 3.55 gear ratio or 129 with the 3.27 gear ratio. Post-2006 Interceptors were supposedly limited to 140mph. If it's a lonely officer in a smaller jurisdiction by himself sitting on the side of the road with no air support and somebody blows by doing 150, the chances of catching the speeder are not good. Is it worth the risk to the public? Individual department policy and officer discretion will come in to play in the decision to pull out and attempt to catch up or just stay put and get on the radio.
I'd fully expect an officer to pull me over if I was doing 100-110. A rider doing 150 raises interesting questions and may require different tactics. |

I highly doubt it is out of laziness of the office or apathy towards the rider.
Public safety is paramont in chases, how often do you see cops give up when the environment gets too crowded with other traffic or pedestrians? Chasing a speeding car can be done when the car is limited to the same space the officer is. A bike, especially when ridden by a moron, can slip into places cars cannot fit further endangering the officer, the rider, and others. LEOs have other tools available to them; radios, planes, choppers, to name some. Your brother's luck will run out.

Like other people have said, a cop isn't going to risk causing an accident just to catch someone speeding. Besides, they could just get your plate number and vehicle description from the dashcam and wait outside your house. And congratulations on being the smart child in your family.

As a person who has run from the cops many times. 99.99% of the time they will chase after you. I have only been busted one time after running tho. As I have gotten older I no longer do it.

Let's just say he cheated when he put his flashing lights on.
I've had a few of what I would today call stupid moves on the highway. Last year I did 185MPH on route 4 but just for a few miles. My buddy thought his Ducati was fast. I told him it's nice but a 916 is an antique.

His luck pretty much already did run out, he hasn't owned a bike in over 10 years. Ever since he was doing 80 MPH wheelie and hit a pothole and fell on his back.. Lucky he had his Joe Rocket jacket on or who knows what condition he would be in today... he messed up his ankle a bit but other than that he was super lucky..

I rarely every speed. Not only because the cops around here are extremely strict with motorcyclists, but i really don't feel the need to. Everywhere i need to go is within an hour. Going 15-20 mph the speed limit will only get me there, with no traffic which is rare, about 5 mins sooner. I never leave myself that short amount of time to get anywhere. For work, I'm a minimum of 15 mins early all the time sitting in the parking lot waiting. Even when i take long trips on the thruway, in my car even, i usually don't go more than 9-10 mph over. And that's pushing it. I just don't see a reason to speed. Not worth it in my eyes.
To answer you're question, I have heard that cops will pull off of a chase if they deem it to be too dangerous. I've spoken to guys that live in my general area that have outrun cops but have also gotten home to a trooper sitting around the corner of their house waiting for them to get home. The technology that they have in those cars is getting beyond ridiculous. Those scanners they have can process like 2 license plates a second from a reasonable distance too. Correct me if I'm wrong but i think that's right. Quote:

To me, it is about the potential for causing destruction of each type of vehicle.
A motorcycle+rider (mass ~ 540 lb) rolling at 100 mph and then hitting a car can only cause 13% of the damage a Ford Crown Victoria+LEO moving as fast could (mass ~ 3,980 lb) .

have you ever gone 150+ on a 600cc, not on the speedo, but actual speed? It takes a lot more then a good sweeper. I got my ZX14 up to 165 before running out of road.

I'll tell you where the real difference is, sport bike vs. tour/cruise
If I ran open headers on my TL, I'd get pulled over by every black and white I passed, but for some reason "hardlies" can roll all over town with straight pipes and narry a cherry. the other thing, put 4 sport bikes together... ya'll gonna get pulled over. if you ride by yourself and don't get too stupid, should be fairly ok. |

Cops sometimes have common sense. If they see a guy weaving through traffic at 150 mph, are they gonna be able to catch him in a relatively safe manner? Probably not.
