[visordown.com] - First new smallcapacity BMW expected to be naked 300
The TVS Draken concept THE first of a range of new small-capacity BMWs will be a 300cc naked built in collaboration with Indian manufacturer TVS, according to several reports. Indian bike websites say the machine will be a single-cylinder naked 300 to compete with Honda’s CBR300R, and that it will be in production by 2016. A BMW-badged version of the machine is likely to go on sale in the UK. BMW and TVS signed a deal last year to make bikes together. All are to be sub-500cc, and sold in distinct BMW and TVS versions depending on the markets they’re going to. In October BMW’s UK head of marketing, Lee Nicholls, told Visordown the deal would lead to a range of sub-500cc machines, including a naked model, built in India and sold both there and in Europe. Nicholls said the range could also include an adventure model and would be introduced over the next three years. That could suggest – and Indian websites are reporting – that the naked 300 will the first of a number of varied new models sharing the same engine and chassis, or ‘platform’. TVS’ current line-up consists predominantly of scooters and 125 commuters but in February the firm unveiled a naked single-cylinder 250 concept called the Draken, allegedly making 38.5hp and 17ft.lb. BMW's current lowest-capacity machine is the G650GS entry-level adventure bike, which has an engine built by Lifan in China. [RideApart] - News: BMW To Launch Smaller Bikes
Tweet
BMW Motorrad has signed an agreement with Indian motorcycle manufacturer TVS to together make a new range of smaller motorcycles, which will be under 500cc that will be distributed and sold around the world. BMW currently has a line-up of 19 motorcycles and scooters in the 650cc – 1600cc but until now has not had any representation in the smaller capacity motorcycle segment. The partnership with TVS, which is India’s fourth largest motorcycle manufacturer, would allow BMW to manufacture bikes on the sub-continent and export them to other markets including the U.S. This move will also give BMW a foothold in India, which is the second fastest growing motorcycle market in the world behind China, and saw sales of motorcycles in the over 150cc segment more than double in 2012 – 2013 from 206,386 units to 447,266. BMW will be joining Harley-Davidson, KTM and Honda who currently manufacture bikes in India along with Triumph Motorcycles that announced plans on setting up a new factory in Karnataka, near Bangalore in 2012 that the company says will eventually allow it to produce 250,000 bikes a year. While all of the new, smaller engine capacity BMW motorcycles will built at TVS production facilities in Chennai, India, there will be distinct BMW and TVS derivatives that will be sold through each company’s own distribution networks. TVS’s current line-up consists predominantly of scooters and 125cc commuter style motorcycles. At present there is no word on what type of motorcycles any of these could be, or when the first motorcycle from this joint venture will be launched. However, in February TVS debuted a single-cylinder 250cc concept naked bike called the Draken at the New Delhi Auto Expo. India’s motorcycle media is currently speculating that that the BMW-TVS tie-up could see a 300cc naked version as the first bike to be launched, followed by an adventure style bike – similar in looks to the GS models – but with all versions sharing the same frame and sub-500cc engine. BMW and TVS have neither confirmed any of these details but have said there will be several small capacity motorcycles built in India that will be launched within the next three years. Skeptical until I see proof that it's a "real" BMW and not just a BMW roundel glued onto something else.
There's no denying that we live in a global economy -- the idea that products are tied to to the nationality of their parent companies hasn't been true for years. But it's one thing to, say, build a Subaru plant in the U.S., and make cars that are undeniably Subarus....it's quite another to take a prized and highly valuable brand and apply it to a vehicle made by a company you happen to have signed a contract with. Think Toyota, GM and the NUMMI plant in Kalifornia. The Chevy Nova and the Toyota Corolla were the same car... and it fooled precisely noone. Personally I think GM got the better end of that deal. I always looked at the product and tought "Toyota - reliable - good buy" rather than "GM - clueless - can't build a decent small car." In the unlikely event that this thing ever reaches the U.S., it had better walk, talk, and quack like a BMW or it's going to irreparably damage the brand.

I'd love an s1000rr in 600 form. If it looked good... Non-market established companies seem to introduce ugly things and then I don't want to buy them.

Me too!!! Only I'd prefer something that competes in the heavy middleweight class.. (GSXR750, MV Agusta F3, Panigale 899....). That's the logical market for BMW.
Back to the OP.... this bike is for the Indian market and built there. I'll be interested ONLY if it's not a BMW badge slapped on a bike that's got nothing to do with BMW.

Having ridden a S1000RR and a Honda CBR 600 there is not much difference in size, certainly not enough to make any real difference not to me at 5 foot 11 inches.

@adouglas you are absolutely right. If it's Kymco or Hyosung quality with a BMW badge (wait... BMW's aren't meant for qaulity..are they?) then it might be a good bike. Even an s300rr would be nice! |

Is he playing air guitar? And what's that suspicious bulge in front of his belly button area?
