All I know is without the ear plugs, when I get to my destination (after commuting), I have ringing in my ears for a while. With the plugs, no ringing at all.

No worries. I just want to save what I have left of my hearing! Besides, if I am going to lose (more of) my hearing, I want it to be for something more fun than road noise, like a loud concert! LOL!

I have some hearing lose already and my helmet gets a lil loud after a while, so maybe if it helps my hearing and doesn't impair it I will try it out, just to see what happens... My dad never put no ear plugs on me while we blasted around on his Harley's I never wore them in the past, but feel it may be a good thing to cut out the whistling sounds. It's at least worth a try for me, but probly ain't what everyone wants. Different strokes. Ever been to a rave and seen a speaker hugger? That used to be me. Ever seen a guy by .50 cals, mortars, big guns with no ear plugs? Yes used to be me. I only had ear plugs sometimes. Hearing lose for me is a definite, haha so I don't see a reason not to at least try it, and studies and the Msf say its at least a good idea so why not. If it ain't for you it's not, heck might not even be for me.
It's worth a try on my end though. I def hate the sound of the whistle when my visor is lifted or cracked open... Yuck

I didn't like the ear plugs at first... It took me a few rides to get used to having them in and I didn't really think it made a huge difference till I went to work with them in one day and back home without and then noticed how much of a difference they made. Definitely worth at least a try...

I was the same, never wore ear plugs on my dad's bike growing up, or around loud music or heavy machinery or anything really and definitely have some issues due to thinking I was invincible back then...

I am getting into this squid sport fishing!

Found another squid today. On a Harley, of course. His brain bucket was not even latched with the strap, wearing a hoodie, shorts, and timberland boots. Ohh and he was smoking a cigarette too while riding... CLASSIC SQUID

Which model is it at 32dB?

I'm riding with Howard Leight Max Lite NNR30.

I would recommend them to those who feel uncomfortable with plugs.

No pics but two sportbike squids today. Full face helmets, T's and shorts. Only noticed them cause as one pulled out into the highway he was beeping his horn, then he revved the bike up as high as he could without hitting the limiter and nearly shook the windows out of the panes.

Really dude? Really?!

I would recommend them to those who feel uncomfortable with plugs.

I use the Max Leights on occasion too; somewhat large, but quite comfortable.

For higher NRR I use E-A-R EarSoft Blast or E-A-Rsoft SuperFit. From what I gather (I emailed the company, a subsidy of 3M), except for the price and 'graphic' on them, they are the same plug.

The best way to find the plugs for you is to try out a bunch of different ones and see which fit you the best and are most comfortable for you, as well as find out how much attenuation you want. The best way to do this is with an assortment pack. I highly recommend this pack. It has 35 different sets of plugs ranging from NRR 28-33 (28dB attenuation - 33dB). [Please note, dB values are non-linear, so although that might not seem like a wide range, 28dB and 33dB attenuation is quite a bit; volume/attenuation amount doubles each 3dB] If you find that 28dB is still too quiet for you, check out the Reusable pack.

The biggest difference between re-usables and disposables: re-usables will last you upwards of a year if you rinse them off every now and then; disposables last me 2-4 weeks depending on how often I ride. Reusables typically max out at about 28dB (though I have seen a few at 32) and come as low as 10dB; disposables go all the way up to 33dB. Lastly, reusables come with a larger upfront cost, but you don't keep replacing them like with disposables.

If you're just looking for something to primarily cut out some of the wind noise, check out reusables in the NRR10-14 range.

Lastly, if you use a helmet communicator (Sena, Cardo, etc.) earplugs of any sort can hugely impact the quality of how they sound. Most helmet communicators I've tried sound very thin and lack low end when playing music through them. Due to acoustical physics, wearing earplugs will help bring back that low end and make your music sound more full and natural, the way you're used to hearing it. For speech and communications, I've found that even low NRR earplugs will make it much easier to understand the person(s) you're talking to as they help cut down the wind noise, which is the main sound competing with the voice you're trying to listen to. Not only does making it easier to hear the person more enjoyable to have a conversation with, you also have to focus on it less, letting you focus more on the road and your safety.

@saxnbass have you put this info into any other thread dedicated to plugs? That post is filled with useful information that would greatly benefit anyone considering ear plugs or trying to decide which to get.

Pretty much any of the disposable ones intended for use a gun ranges claim that rating. I've never tested it, but they definitely make a huge difference when shooting a .45.

I guess I should start wearing them on the bike.

Its a good idea.
seems to increase my endurance, on long rides.

its not only the sound, but a combination of sound and actual air pressure fluctuations that damage your ear drum.

Riding in a no helmet law state is ... Interesting. I didn't want to take pictures of nearly every biker I saw but dang, I do find it interesting how many people choose to ride with no protection of their noggin.

Speaking of squids, saw a link to this comic yesterday:

I currently live in a no helmet law state (FL, probably the biggest population of squids live here) and am moving to a helmet law state soon; should be a nice change of scenery :P

I work and do a good bit of riding/driving in Pennsylvania where there's no helmet law. I know what you mean!

I actually saw a guy come across the bridge from New Jersey into PA and at the light he took his helmet off and put it in his saddle bags.....

Most of the helmeted riders were packed up heavier than I was so they appeared to be out of staters going through. But I did get buzzed by a gal on a Harley with a Texas plate, and her helmet on the sissy bar.

I think helmets are like seat belts, once you reach the age of adulthood, you should be allowed to choose your own level of safety. So I respect these riders right to choose, I just find their choice interesting.

I know. I used the wrong wording. I was meaning to express that adults should be able to choose their own safety.

If I die from my choice to not wear protective equipment, it's my own fault.

I think helmets are like seat belts, once you reach the age of adulthood, you should be allowed to choose your own level of safety. So I respect these riders right to choose, I just find their choice interesting.
In Texas its legal to go without if you've taken the motorcycle safety course and carry your card with you to prove it. Otherwise they can ticket you. I guess the logic is that once you've taken the course you can make an "informed" decision...or something. I never go out without my helmet, jacket, gloves and boots...
