New Rider
Hey all! Been looking to buy a ninja 250r for awhile now. Im a complete noob when it comes to motorcycles though. Had a few questions. I rode a 2010 ninja 250r today, (potential future buy). now this is a bike with less then 600 miles and is a 2010. Hasnt been riden much. The bike seemed to fluctuate when idiling a bit (1000-1600 rpm's.) and if given a little gas it would turn off. weather conditions were around 80 degrees and the bike was warmed up for about 5-10 minutes. I also test drove it and it seemed really hard to launch. i would stall it a few times which i think is because of the idle? it seemed OK when brought up to speed though. I have driven manual car for 3 years now but never a motorcycle. So i didnt purchase the bike. I was just wondering if this was normal.
Any other tips/advice on these 250 ninjas? Btw i love these bikes. |

Welcome, Armin!!
That is not normal. A bike like that, sitting for almost three years, but having gasoline in the carburetor a few times and then left to evaporate away until the next ride, may have developed some gunk in the very small passages of the carburetor. That will require taking those apart and deep-cleaning them. You could get a price reduction equivalent to the labor cost of that work.

+1 to what Motofool said.
If the price is right though, you could land yourself a nice bike on the cheap. You have a local resource to help you eval the bikes your looking at? Maybe that same person can clean the carbs for you saving you a bunch of $$ on the purchase as well as the maintenance.

Wow thanks for the quick replies! Looks like I found the right forums for the ninja
Yeah I thought it would be build up. I don't want to mess with carb cleaning just yet though. Rather buy a bike that doesn't have those issues but we will see. Well the price was around 3000. Ill see what happens with that bike. I have a few more to look at though so I was just wondering what to expect. I've been patient this long I can wait a bit longer ;D. |

3,000 is very high for a bike that's been sitting for 2.5 years. You will need to get the carbs cleaned, and everything checked/lubed, probably a new air filter (cheap) and you'll have to make sure you give the chain a thorough cleaning... I'd say you're looking at (based on my local prices) 200 bucks give or take in maintenance. I'd wait if it was me Good luck! |

Ah it won't let me upload pics from phone so one sec. And after I rode it home on highway the idle was at like 4-5k. I got scared bad but just adjusted with the idle screw. I guess that's ok. Anyway pics comming |

I think CycleGear.com has good prices. And your start-up/throttle issue -- I am by no means a mechanic nor do I really know what I'm talking about but I can tell you that my bike (2012) takes more than 5-10 min to warm up, even on a hot day, and also it needs to warm up in the 2-3k range. I drive mine around with the choke in that position until it really IS warmed up before I close it. If it hesitates at all on the throttle I just don't close it yet. That's how I know she's not warm yet. it's annoying but I've gotten used to it.

Awesome! I've been looking for a site like this. I see they have a sale going on one of the bike stands. Looks good and decently priced. I'll probably buy one even though I just made one out of wood |

Welcome! Your new bike looks great! Sweet looking helmet too...what kind is it?
Here's a good/cheap rear stand that I've been using for a while: http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com...ool-Stand.aspx

Another question. Why are K&N air filters so damn expensive? 60$ I recall? I haven't looked at any other brands.

Wow that helmet does seem to be a great deal! I couldn't get it though, I'm not hardcore enough to pull off that look.
Buy a K&N and you won't have to buy another air filter, they are reusable. And here's another link for ya: K&N filter for $35
