Question What do you put in your bike?

It's safe to assume your machines, no matter what they are, are like your body, feed your body McDonald's all year and you're gonna have a sweaty nasty puke covered jacket and motorcycle, so what oil (synth conventional and brand) and what fuel (octane) do you run through your bike? Also. Why?

I think the majority of us use shell rotella t6, but there are plenty of arguments around what kind of oil you use. also, there isn't any reason to use anything other than 87 octane fuel unless you're running some kind of exceptionally special setup that has modified the bike to run on a higher octane, for whatever reason.

Fuel: Whatever is "Regular" (so something in the high 80's) at whatever station I happen to stop at because it's cheap.

Oil: Whatever the store that I find the oil filter at carries. Currently Valvoline 10w40 synthetic because I hate running around all over town when suddenly a store stops carrying my filter.

Kawasaki genuine oil filter.

RON 95 fuel (that is the lowest and cheapest I could find in Malaysia. We do not carry RON 80 ++ anymore).

Rotella a T6 (Goes in every high performance four stroke) and 87 alcohol free from the local BP.

You didn't ask, but in my two strokes I run T5, yamalube 2r, and VP110.

I heard before that the most important thing in oil choice is using the same oil... Take that as you wish.

I heard the otherwise. as long as you have motor oil irregardless of the brand.

Yes, i forgot to mention that one. Irregardless of the brand but must be of the same type of oil.

Not really, only 25,000 miles. I just switched to purple last summer.


There's merit if you're just looking at the oil from a spec-sheet standpoint and cost is no object. Film strength, cleanliness, additives, etc.

There's not merit if you're realistic and are good about changing your oil regularly; T6 is a great oil and is very reasonably priced. I fell in love with purple at my last job, likely will use it in bikes for a long time. Also running purple in my car's transmission, although I change my car's engine oil often enough that I can't justify the cost of purple. But purple does smell delicious.

Blackstone reports from T6 are typically pretty danged good.

Why?
It's a motorcycle developed primarily for the not so rich asian market, so I guess it's fine running it with a no so rich market budget... I might be wrong though.

I run 87 octane gasoline, doesn't matter where I get it from but I refuse to put ethanol in the bike if it can be avoided. Luckily my local gas station chain doesn't use a lot of ethanol

For oil I only use Amsoil, I've had friends use the stuff to great effect and it's a quality product all around. It's the only oil that's ever been in my ford ranger and it's up to 160k miles without so much as a hiccup

Then for antifreeze I use Engine ice because it's the only coolant that is both race legal in my orgs and can handle the winter without me having to drain the system, yay being lazy!

I have a ZX6R that I use for the track. I use non-ethanol fuel, which is usually 91 RON (the minimum required by the zx6r). I use Amsoil for engine lubrication.

Answer to the actual OP question:

Right now I'm using Motul 300V, which is high-end full synthetic. However, I'm doing that only because the track day organization I ride with had a deal with Motul that gave us racer-discount pricing. Sadly, I think that deal has now ended but we'll see.

If I were buying at full price, I'd be happy using Rosella T6 or any synthetic motorcycle oil from a reputable manufacturer.

I'd always go full synthetic. To be honest, though, we tend to change our oil so often that it really doesn't matter a whole lot.

Do a search on "energy conserving" and "clutch slip" for important info about oil and your clutch.

Re fuel: Octane as recommended because that's what the engine is designed for. If you can get ethanol-free fuel, use that.

My view on fuel: There's nothing magical about premium gasoline. The Ninjette is designed for regular, so save your money and use regular. High-octane fuel is needed in higher-compression engines to prevent detonation (knock). That's about it.

A few seconds of searching will give you endless threads about fuel and oil with passionate arguments on all sides. Take your pick. Some will wax rhapsodic about the wonderful benefits of putting premium in your tank -- everything from more power to smoother running to better gas mileage. Try it yourself, keep very careful records, and you decide based on data instead of Interwebz advice or gut instinct. You won't hurt the bike by using premium. All that will suffer is your bank account.

I use premium since up here, that's the only ethanol-free gas available. I don't worry about ethanol in my daily driver car but since gas has a good chance of sitting in the bike for a while, I prefer not to put ethanol in there.

I haven't done an oil change yet but it will be T6 like others use. I've been using T6 in my cars for a long time. My wife's X5 has had T6 in it since its first oil change in 2002. 170k miles later, it's pretty incredible how the heads look inside (was able to see during valve cover gaskets replacement).

Filter: Kawi OEM because I'm leery about different bypass pressures in other filters and the OEM filters seem solid.
Oil: Rotella T6 now, but I'll probably be changing back to Mobil 1 4T when I run out of my current stock
Gas: Whatever top-tier 87 I can find, ethanol free if I'm ever over by the lake.
Other: Fuel system treatment (usually Gumout w/Regane (PEA)) after every oil change to combat the nastiness that I'm sure results from the bike sitting for a few weeks on occasion.

I figure these bikes are so cheap to maintain (no premium fuel, doesn't take much oil, etc.) that I can afford to keep things clean.

Premium gas always for me. The price difference isn't going to make or break me. I feel that it's better to use that. IMO.

As for oil we use only Amsoil in the appropriate weight for whatever bike we are putting it in.

Teri, just out of curiosity, why do you "feel it's better" to use premium?

Any reason is valid, to be honest. If it makes you feel better and you can afford it, why not? Just wondering what the basis of that decision actually is.

I always had a feeling that the slower burning higher octane gas made more midrange punch in bikes that weren't as high revving. But I typically run the cheapest ethonal free gas I can that won't detonate.

It should be said that there's no harm in running a higher octane gas. You're just basically throwing money away, but it isn't going to hurt the bike. But if that's what makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, and you personally think it's worth it, go for it. Run all the high octane gas you want.

Sometimes higher octane gas can get you less power though.. Most race teams try to get the lowest octane gas needed for their motors. (Or more realistically build the motor to get every bit out of the gas they have to use.)

But doesn't the slower-burning high-octane gas mean your timing is off? It's timed for a particular burn rate....

CaliGrrl has a good point. This interests me because the only ethanol free gas around is usually 91 octane. Last summer was my first with my 06 Ninja 250, and only ran 93 octane with ethanol, though I usually added a fuel treatment. But... since I never tried 87 or 89 octane, or ethanol free, I don't know if I experienced dimished performance with 93 octane or not.

Regular rotella in the KLR and the 250, synthetic 10w40 valvoline 4 stroke in the tenere and the Versys because it was on sale and I stocked up.
