How do these shoes look?

http://www.amazon.com/Vega-Mens-Merg...ustomerReviews

Apparently I need boots or over the ankle shoes for the MSF course.

I like these shoes (i need a pair by this friday)
Cheap price, fast shipping, good looks, great reviews.

Your thoughts? I would get a boot but boots are not very comfortable to me, I know the over the ankle shoe will not offer as much protection, but to be honest, that's just a risk i'm willing to take. They are still a huge upgrade from my sneakers.

They look fine enough for their intended use. You might as well get a nice pair of GORE-TEX waterproof boots though. Slider aside, they will offer about the same protection with other uses at the same time.

Side note: Full boots can take some time to break in and and feel comfy, don't totally write them off just yet. Try some new and used, maybe it will be da ticket.

I planned on taking my hiking boots to my MSF but forgot them 1.5 hours behind at home. The next morning before the actual riding part of the MSF I stopped in at the local Wally World and bought a pair for $20, took the course and returned the boots on my way outta town the next day. Gotta do what ya gotta do!

Frankly those look marginal to me. But them I'm ATGATT and wear full gear all the time.

Riding boots do three things:

1) Protect your ankles by offering support if you crash. The stiffer and higher the boot, the better the support. Race boots are almost like ski boots -- they don't flex side-to-side much at all.

2) Protect your shins from flying stuff like stones, sticks, etc.

3) Protect the upper part of your left boot from scuffs caused by the shift lever.

Look at these and you decide how good they'd be at the first two tasks.

Then look at serious riding boots and observe where the hard armor is located.

To me shorty boots like these are a waste of time. Just get some Wally World work boots. They'll support your ankles and protect your shins better.

PS: Don't be fooled by the toe sliders. If you're sliding a toe you should really take a look at your foot position.

FWIW I own two pair of boots. One is a serious race-oriented boot that I bought for the track. The other is a pair of garden-variety Bilt Trackstars from Cycle Gear, which despite their ambitious name are really a touring boot. They cost me about $50 on sale and with the addition of some decent insoles, are just fine for commuting and everyday use. (Tip on the Bilt boots: The US size on the tag is wrong -- the correct Euro size is molded into the sole.)

hahaha, I think that's my favorite idea yet!

Yeah, i'll probably just grab a pair of boots from walmart then bring em back (they have a good return policy)

I remember now why I didn't like my touring boots. The reason why is because they were not comfortable enough to walk around in. I often times will get off my bike and walk around because my butt needs a rest. lol

What boots do you have?

Both my track boots and touring boots are comfortble enough for me to wear all day, both riding and walking around.

The boots I had were the joe rocket ballistic touring boots http://www.amazon.com/Joe-Rocket-Bal...torcycle+boots

They were decent, but they felt funny walking around on, and don't get me started how hard it was to back my bike out with them on... ugh... what a nightmare..

Go to big 5 sporting goods and buy a pair of response gear tactical service boots for $20 to use for the course and have as a backup pair of work/thrash boots until you get your license and decide what riding boots you want to drop a bunch of money on.
