Different take on a quick action throttle.
Hi guys, as most of y'all know, the easiest way to get a quick action throttle is to go in for a throttle tube with a larger cam. There is also the lesser known and used way of modifying your throttle junction and installing a stroke multiplier there. I've placed an order for a junction stroke multiplier, from http://www.allensperformance.co.uk/p...throttles.html, which has a ratio of 1:1.33. This means that for every one mm of throttle pull, this will amplify that to 1.33mm. I've already done an R6 throttle mod, using an 06 R6 throttle, housing and custom cables. So I didn't want to futz about with the throttle tube anymore. Also, my experience with the zip-tie mod was less than satisfying on my original throttle(I'm an expert at screwing things up).
Does anyone have any experience or knowledge about this mod? I would love your input on the same. P.s. This is a track only bike, so street ridability isn't of any importance. |

I think one of the motion pro style throttle sets has one of these built into it but if I remember right it was a single cable 2-stroke setup. Would you need one of these for each cable?
The idea is simple enough but I'd take some serious measurements because I'm thinking the 1.77 would be more the ticket for this slow ass bike. The largest cam in my motion pro setup is like the bare minimum of what I wanted and it dwarfs the Cam on the R6 tube. It's more a issue with street riding because you are on the bike much longer then on the track but if you shorten the rotation by half your throttle gets twice as hard to physically turn. It just like cutting your breaker bar in half and trying to turn the same nut. |

I'm not sure how reasonable it is to swap/mod, but another item to look at is the wheel on the carb. The wheel on the throttle tube is like the front sprocket, the wheel on the carb is like the rear sprocket, and the throttle opening is equivalent to the wheel turning. You can make the final output faster by making the first one bigger or the second one smaller.
My '09 500 uses the exact same throttle tube part number as the later PreGens, so the carb wheel must be quite different to get the massive difference in action between the two bikes (my 500 is 1/4 turn). |

what i did was to go get a dirt bike throttle with a microscopic throw (massive cam) then i took my stock throttle housing and cut a slot on the top so that the massive cam could fit (it sticks out the top of the box) and then the cut goes back about an inch so it can pull on the cable. now i have full throw at about 75 degrees rotation

To Rojo's point though, I have this cam with the CR carbs and the throttle is hella hard to turn because of the ratio and the massive spring on the CR carbs. |

Also, I'm not entirely sure how I'm gonna use it... The guy who sold it to me doesn't reply to emails and speaks in a very heavy English accent so I can barely make out what he says... *sigh* Paging @akima, any chance you could call and talk to him for us please? Pretty please? |

I would consider cutting the carb cam and shortening the radius before complicating the whole cable system.

Just noticed this Suzuki on his website:
Interesting tail! Haven't seen anything like that before. Makes me think of thunderbirds for some reason. Apparently it has "magnesium bodied VM's". I know you can get really light, magnesium wheels. What's a VM? |

I think he's talking about the carbs. Mag is brownish in color and if you look at the picture, the carbs are brown.

The VM is a series of carb made by Mikuni since the 70's. It is probably the most mass produced carb in history used on everything from dirtbikes to street bikes to snomobiles. Available in both 4 stroke and 2 stroke versions.

@psych0hans - noted. I'll ring on Saturday. If he's not around I probably wont be able to ask those questions until Tuesday.
Also: was it you that asked for my Power Commander map? I haven't actually got a map created yet (which is probably very bad for the engine!), but even when I do, you might not be interested anymore as I never installed the K&N pod filters. I decided to just install a K&N slot-in filter that goes in the stock airbox. I was advised the pod filters would be less resistent to rain... and we get lots of rain. |

Tried getting through to them 3 times today, but no luck. I had the questions all written out and everything!
Will try again soon. Have you had any other response to your email yet? Have you tried looking for a youtube video of the product? There might be an installation or review video out there with useful info in it. |

@psych0hans
I phoned through a bunch of times a while ago but each time I phoned they were either out or no one picked up. I remembered this thread today and gave one last call and got through to a guy called Dave. I told him you have fitted an '06 R6 throttle and he didn't seem to think that affected the situation. So questions and answers below... >>> How does it work? He replied: "You run a cable into one end of this thing from the throttle and you run a cable into the other side of this thing from the carbs." It adds leverage so smaller movements of the throttle are needed to get the same effect. >>> Will it work with a push/pull throttle? Replied "should do" He said the pull cable opens the throttle and the push cable means when you close the throttle it closes the butterfly valve. He said this push/pull design and its use of springs means that if a cable breaks butterfly will still be closed. >>> Will it work on a ninja 250? "yeah - it should fit anything" "it's not model specific" "universal part" >>> how is it installed? At this point he was just trying to tell me to relay that you should be very careful. He seemed worried that you'd get it wrong and make the bike dangerous. I think he was trying to tell me that if you wired it up wrong it can result in the butterfly valve not automatically closing if a cable breaks. >>> are any modifications needed? I asked him that and he again re-iterated "just be careful" He said you have to cut the throttle cable to fit this thing. He said that there should be 2 cables going to the throttle. I think he said that only the pull cable should go into this thing and the push cable should be left as is. I think he gave up trying to explain it to me (probably because I'm a mechanical tard) and suggested that you might be best off putting on a simpler system like a "Hairy R's" quick action throttle. http://www.hairy-rs.com/ He said that Hairy R's are much easier to fit. They come with instructions telling you what to do, so you don't have to be so knowledgeable. Best I can do |
