What's everyone wearing for pants?

Khakis here. THinking of upgrading to jeans.

Jeans are not an upgrade, unless you mean dedicated, kevlar-reinforced riding jeans. Even then, if they're not padded you're gonna get hurt if you go down.

Me: When it's not super nasty out: AGVSport Willow perforated leather track pants. Zipped to the jacket. Every time*.

When it's really freakin' cold or wet: Fieldsheer overpants... can't remember the model.

* I will wear jeans to run to the diner at lunch once in a great while, but even then I've got leather jacket, boots, gauntlets and helmet.

I went from my work dress khakis to scorpion Duece overpants, has removeable liner as well. Actually gave me more confidence because I wasn't always thinking about what would happen to my ass cheeks if I went down only wearing dress pants. Went almost a year before I got the overpants. I love them

I finally committed and ordered the Tourmaster Overpants- that is the actual make model. I was also considering the Revit Axis because of the easier in-out zipper. What sold me on the Tourmaster was the better hip protection and knee area, too much of a tradeoff for ease of dressing and the other issue is the unsecure belt area in the axis- too easy to slip off. I should have these tomorrow and be able to put on miles on my bike- only 55 miles ridden so far since June...

Instead of dedicated riding pants I chose knee/shin pads that go under your normal pants. The model I own might be discontinued but this looks like the new model. The price is $105 for these from Icon but safety is worth it.

What about ass pads? If you go down, more than likely will slide on back side too. Don't want to end up like hank hill

Problem is regular pants will shred quickly in a slide, leaving you sliding naked.
Everything we do involves a trade off though.

Dainese Delta Pro Leather pants for when I'm just riding. Rev'it Axis Overpants + Forcefield strap-on armor underneath for commuting or whenever else I intend to change out of my riding gear at my destination.

Bought some Hood riding jeans off jp129 here. I also wear Sliders Khaki kevlar pants, as well as Red Route riding pants. And then I have two pairs of textile pants. One for winter and one for super super hot summers.

I wear the kevlar/aramid lined pants the most though as I can keep them on at my work.

Anything remotely spirited will call for my 1 piece suit, though.

Do they make abrasion-resistant armored underpants?

Forcefield makes armored underpants but that's basically padding for falls and doesn't combat road rash (I think its basically lycra pants with armor).

For twisties I have my Dainese Delta Pro leathers but I'm woefully under dressed for around town (typically jeans).

I'm pretty sure underpants are only designed to supplement riding pants with armor, not to be standalone armor. That's like asking for pockets for your undies

same thing for me except replace ass with knees, icon stryker knee/shin guards as well as my boots protect my lower body until I magically manage to save enough for a race suit down the line and I'll wear that when I go hard the stryker stuffs for commuting (the convenience of it really is that you can wear it with anything)

I am a school teacher and I try to dress decent to work which means Kaks 3 or 4 days a week and Jeans 1 or 2 times a week. Been thinking of OVERPANTS -- what kind / brand did you get?

Scorpion deuce, a little pricey but they zip all the way up on each side. Very ready to get on and off. Has removable waterproof liner. If you get these just make sure to order one size larger than what your waist size is. I had to go with XXL, even though the xl is my waist.

Buy a proper leather suit, boots, and gauntlet gloves and be done with it. I wear my Spidi suit, Sidi boots, Shoei helmet, and Alpinestars gloves. I added a Spidi back protector this spring too. I've crashed with jeans and they definitely do not hold up well. I have a scar on my leg to prove it. Learn from my mistake and dress for the crash, not the ride

Go to the side door and slide it open. Crouch on the running board. Look at the asphalt going by, about 18 inches below you, at a nice, sedate 30 mph.

Now roll out of the van onto the pavement. Picture in as much detail as you can what will happen next. If you're realistic, it will involve a lot of pain, blood and lost skin.

That is EXACTLY what will happen to you if you low side. Only if you low side, you might be going a lot more than 30 mph.

How do you think you'll do wearing an Old Navy cotton shirt and Banana Republic pants?

Do you know how much it costs to go to the ER? Do you know how ugly road rash scars are? Google some images.

In another thread you're asking for advice on cornering. Good for you… but it shows that you're enjoying pushing yourself a bit.

It doesn't take gravel to crash. Crashes can come from the unexpected. What if a deer darts across the road? It's that time of year, you know. How about a clueless cager?

Proper gear is a SMART investment. Smarter than buying Banana Republic rather than WalMart, for one thing.

It doesn't seemlessly apply, but my training in the military has taught me constant vigilance and situational awareness. I respect my bike in terms of the risks involved with riding it, hence why I 'chicken out' when getting too low in turns, as stated in the other thread. I've avoided a couple oblivious cagers with at least one avenue of escape in each situation.. I mean, I'm riding about 300lbs of metal with two wheels. Of course I'm going to keep myself in a relatively safe position when around these 2000lb behemoths.

I understand you speak from experience and concern, but my bike is a daily rider, in a small city. There's nothing too crazy technical about avoiding vehicles and staying out of blind spots, knowing by sight and feel the speeds they're taking, compared to your speed and avenues of approach. You know we have much more options in terms of avoidance, given the corect mental clarity durign the situation.

To be perfectly honest I am very tempted to try this at low speed wearing full gear. Assuming that there wasn't anything to collide with -- it would be a very interesting experience.

Any real reason not to? Apart from bodily harm --- is it possible that a helmet impact would damage the helmet to the point where it would not be safe to use anymore?

Only reason I ask, is because I've had quite a few 'get-offs' trying to slide a skateboard around a turn -- very similar fall to a low side wash out.

Helmets are only designed to take one impact so if you're doing something similar to an accident, I wouldn't reuse it.

Josh, your choices are your own and if you believe you're adequately protected, far be it from anyone to disabuse you of that notion.

However, accidents do happen and all the training and situational awareness in the world won't stop them from occurring.

Yes, I've been riding 27 years. I've laid a bike down only once, about a week after I started riding. I have crashed a bicycle at 30 mph, however, and road rash REALLY sucks.

No, I've never had a cager hit me. I had one look right at me, look right through me, and pull out right in front of me one time, but no crash. Had I been two seconds closer the outcome would have been different. I have had a deer bounce off my car.

Just because it's never happened doesn't mean it never will. I view safety gear as simple good sense. If I can protect myself better, I will do so. The tools are available… so why not? That's just my personal attitude towards safety. They do not replace good riding practices.

Like you, I am a firm believer in alertness and caution while riding. I do not, however, believe for one second that riding in that way will do anything but reduce my risk. It will never prevent the unexpected from happening.

Your choice is to ride in a cotton shirt, loose-fit pants and Nikes. Mine is to dress in such a way that if I crash, I'm a hell of a lot more likely to get up and walk away. Those choices have nothing at all to do with situational awareness, training, experience or skill. They are the choices we make to protect ourselves (or not) IF the accident happens, not WHEN.

The logic of "situational awareness and constant vigilance will keep me safe" suggests that you believe you are unlikely to ever go down because you are in full control of what happens on the road. Yet you choose to wear a helmet and gloves. Why only those?

Cause my melon is the only part of my body that won't heal at a full 30-mph fall/collision, and I feel riding with gloves gives you better feel of the controls... and keeps that black mess off your hands. /shrug

I'm pretty sure the military also doesn't teach you to go out of the wire without full gear even with all the proper training and vigilance

You can be as prepared as you want; **** still happens. You prepare for the worst case scenario.

Just because something could be considered "healed" after an accident doesn't mean it'll be as good as before. The process to get to "healed" often sucks too. Read jiggles' story as adouglas mentioned. You can still get ****ed up going slow so every bit of protection helps. Also talk to anyone who's had road rash and had to get their wounds scrubbed out. The friends who have told me about the experience never ever want to go through that again.

I'm not actually located in SF, hence why I say bay area, so I don't deal with that kind of population. My recent crash happened with no one else around; just me and an old fart in his car not paying attention. In any case, most cagers don't "try" to kill riders, but they sure have a tendency to come close anyway...

Obviously the choice is still yours. Keep in mind that a lot of people start wearing more gear and advocate it because of past experiences, not just for the sake of saying it.
