It's pretty interesting that Yamaha is moving into 3 cylinder engines on the new bikes. I wonder if the 4 cylinder is going to be kind of phased out in the future?
I bet the 3 cylinder engine makes for a better street bike than a 4 cylinder - the 3 has more down low torque. I like the sound of 4 cylinders though. It will be interesting to see where the future of motorcycles goes before we're all driving those electric Zero bikes. |

I'm very intrigued by this new one. If it gets good reviews maybe I'll pick up a used one five years from now! My FZ6 keeps me happy as it is though.

Not at all. The original triple naked bike has been around for a while, and looks much better than that Yami to boot. It even has a little brother now.

You forgot to mention the triumph is an extra 2k and has less power. So unless your carving canyons everyday it might not be the way to go. We will have to wait for a comparison.

$1400 more and 105hp vs 113 (aka no difference to speak of, despite the Yami's 172cc advantage). The Street also weighs 14lbs less, so let's just call the power and weight equal for both bikes.

It's just so....ugly.
Like damn you may have found those 80s-colored wheels leftover in a warehouse somewhere but it didn't mean you had to use them. There's just no beauty in it at all. |

The ONLY thing I don't like about the FZ-09 is the taillight, other than that it's gorgeous.
As much as I love the Triumphs, I would take Yamaha reliability any day of the week...that's to say they don't bring back the old triples reliability.

For a bike that isn't absolutely hideous. Actually, the difference is probably $0, because you can get a leftover/used '12 Street Triple. They ruined the '13 anyway

You guys are arguing about horsepower, but what about torque? That's important too and my bet is on the yamaha. I really don't think it's that bad looking, the headlight isn't even bad. I only really like round headlights though and that would look off on one of these. Or the cool kind kawi does on the z1ks but that would be wrong on a yamaha IMO.
I heard this bike has a cross plane crank shaft like the R1s (which sound beautiful) so I wonder how it will sound compared to triumphs, which also sound beautiful, almost like an I6. |

That is one sexy beast...I've had mixed feelings about nakeds but this one sure does it for me. My only concern with naked bikes is no wind protection if I want to take longer interstate trips. I'd say that would be a great next bike.

If Yamaha go the Kawi(N1K, Z1000) or Honda (CB500F, CB500N) way and make a FZ-09 naked and one with fairings, they might have more buyers

I would pick the old school Triumph over Yamaha any day, just on design alone. The 2013 Triumph sucks big time.
But now, we have this... |

I think this bike has a spot in the market for sure. It's sorta hitting the people who want a street triple, but don't want to pay that much money, and don't want to have crazy maintenance bills, but also want something bigger than a 650.
For me, I don't know... I think next summer is when I'll "upsize", and this will likely be on the list to ride. I might end up with a bmw f800r though, I just love the look. |

Only 414 lbs wet, beefy swing arm, adjustable suspension, Yamaha reliability . . . sounds good to me!
Also, it's nice to see some design restraint in the seat, tail section area for a change. Yamaha was famously iconoclastic with its XS750 triples in the 70s, and they were good bikes. Last futzed with by Chicagobob; July 9th, 2013 at 12:14 PM. |

So I was reading some recent comments about this bike. A bunch of guys are not happy that it's limited to 132 mph.
One guy has said in the comments of a few reviews that the Ninja 650 with 50 less hp has the same top speed. He's not very happy about that. Some have been getting the ECU reflashed to eliminate this. Just something interesting to note about the bike. I guess it will do 150ish without the limiter. Most people usually don't have to go that fast anyway. I wonder if other bikes will start coming from the factory with limited top speeds in the future. I know the Busa and ZX14 already have top speed limiters due to the gentlemen's agreement. |

I don't know about the speed limiter issue. I would imagine it would get to that speed quicker than the Ninja 650. Personally, I'd imagine 132 would be pretty rough on the FZ09. I'v only got up to about 120 on a naked bike and I didn't like it at all. In my opinion if someones thinking about doing those kinds of speeds a naked isn't the way to go.

Yeah it's kind of a crazy thing to be upset about as naked bikes are usually not taken up to such speeds. I think people are more upset about not having the potential (even if it won't be used). The torque on the FZ09 will definitely make it entertaining. I was looking into one as a second bike for work/school commuting. It's a little more than I'd want to spend, but I'm investigating all possible options. Oh yeah! |

I'm all for Triumph, I can't stand the looks of the Yami, but over time it will be interesting how they develop the look.
After having my '02 Speed Triple, I will be very hard pressed to leave Triumph. If I do get a newer Speed Triple, I will put the good'ol roundies on there. |

I rode my naked bike (kawi ZRX1200R) to Canada and back a few years ago,
and didn't find a lack of wind protection a problem at all. a properly set up naked bike will give you enough wind on your chest to take any weight off of your wrist's and really, it's pretty comfy for me. As for really high speeds, I tuck in as tight as I can (knees in, elbows in, chin on the tank, butt a little high, and one hand on the throttle, the other on the fork tube..... I've gone a GPS verified 155mph on the ZRX, no issues except running out of road. To me a big windshield takes away from the experience. Just sayin'..... |

Saw and sat on the FZ-09 at the motorcycle show today.
Heck of a good deal. Nakeds aren't really my thing... too upright. But I can appreciate how nice this bike is. Yami has a winner here.
