from your description alone i know i would not buy it for anything over $600. After i looked at it that number could go even lower.

Sounds like it is a heap of garbage taking up space hopefully in his garage. A salvage place will give him 10-200 bucks tops and anything more than that should be considered a fair offer JMO

how much could you get a running one for?
fairings prob $300+
carbs 50-100
tires prob shot
odds and eds will nickel and dime you - think of all the little parts even though they may be cheap you gotta pay shipping.
I would say $100-200 and that is delivered price.

You will lose money on it if he GIVES it to you. Sounds like a headache unless you have a lot of friends with spare parts just laying around.

Unless you plan on doing ALL of the work yourself, I wouldn't even consider it.

I bought my 250 the same way for 400$ with cracked fairings and needed carbs..only put about another 400 into it

I dont mind doing the work on it im gonna keep it for a while anyways..ill offer him 400 as i see about 600 goin into it no more than 500 though

I get my parts cheaper because i dont pay shipping. Motorcycle superstore is ~10 miles away from where i live and theres a motorcycle salvage somewhere around here..

Shipping lol hes my neighbor i live right beside him

To clarify, it is a 1996 Ninja zx9r (ZX900) right? I, too, would not invest more than $500 in a bike that old. It would be ideal if you could inspect the bike yourself, rather than relying on his description, to estimate the work that needs to be done. Overestimate the cost and if it still seems worth it, then go for it. With mileage that low, it can't be that bad, but be weary of bent forks or bent frame. Sometimes, once you think you're close to completing the rebuild, a bent frame that you may have overlooked will be an unpleasant surprise.
