Maybe not electric for the introductory model. Like I suggested in my first post, they already have a huge obstacle just getting this thing to market for around the price they've suggested and getting similar economy to what they've promised.
As a certain other electric based thread has suggested, there's some common (and convincing) misconceptions and inconveniences associated with electric vehicles right now. These include range, performance, charging, initial cost etc etc. I think Elio is going to have enough challenges bringing this trike to market as promised, why throw electric into the mix for the first iteration? Maybe as a second model, electric could be feasible. As an entry to the market? I think electric would take this from a feasible second vehicle for suburbia or city-dwellers to a niche product with a big base of haters and I doubt they'd make it even close to their expected cost. Give it time and I'm right there with you; an electric driven Elio would be badass. I personally would be thrilled if they could get this thing to market with 65 mpg highway, 50 city. IF (and that's a huge if) they can actually get the 85 like they're suggesting without making it unable to get out of its own way and overpriced, I'd be very impressed. |

Might not be safe for you, then. Mountain bikers do stuff that we commuters can not imagine doing. You might just have to resign yourself to needing four wheels to haul the other two. That Elio does not look rack-friendly.

I like it, I mean, "all the envy of your street" is a little far fetched. But, I do think it looks cool and could serve a great purpose.. I mean, 80+ MPG, has a top speed of 100+, Manual & automatic, ABS, etc. etc. It's just another option.
Even if you don't like it, it will help competition, Maybe reduce prices of other entry level cars like the civic and corolla.

I think it's a great step in the right direction for people moving. Ultimately, public transit is the answer for moving mass amounts of people around. But we all know people don't want to give up the "luxury" of driving to work in their own vehicles, so making those smaller and more fuel efficient is the next best thing.
Way to be forward thinking.

Since it is classified as a motorcycle, what about states that require the use of helmets?
Will you be required to wear a helmet while driving this in the states with helmet laws? |

I read somewhere else that they petitioned the EPA to classify it as a car. I classify it as vaporware.

Ah - they don't offer the 900cc engine here. Only one available is a 1.4 liter, both in NA and turbo versions.

If it sounds too good to be true it probably isn't.
The Elio offers a lot at a very low price. I wish I could believe that this vehicle will come to the marketplace but unfortunately it looks like another sales job to get investors' money and buyer's deposits and then go belly up without ever delivering a product to buyers. What Elio claims as far as performance is definitely doable but I don't see how they could make enough money to build the cars and sustain their company. Tesla has been successful but look at the prices of their products. It just sounds like more DeLorean style snakeoil to me.

Sounds like they're about $150 million away from being able to produce it. I seriously doubt that they'll get enough investors by next year to cover that cost.
