Question too short to ride =( seat shaving anyone?

I was looking into shaving my seat down a little so I can touch a little better. The one foot dirt bike stance is really not cutting it for me. I have hardly rode my bike since I got it due to feeling uncomfortable. Now I heard that it will make it not as an enjoyable experience but you can put gel back into the seat? I was just wondering if anyone has had their seat shaved and their thoughts on it. Also if anyone knows where I could get it done I do not want to try to do it my self. I live in Carlisle PA.

thanks guys

Hey there and Welcome. You may be interested in looking at the Roaring Toyz lowering kit. That way, if you go to resell the bike, you can put the stock parts back on and not lose any value. Just my 2 cents.

As a nifty side note, Carlisle is about 2 hours from me. PA riders rule!

If I may ask, what is your inseam?

We've got a few short riders on here that use lowering links, adjusted pegs, or thick soles. Don't recall right off of anyone shaving their seat, but i may not have read the relavant thread.

I put this in your other post, but it's worth repeating. I cans it on my bike, not moving and neither foot touches, the longest I have balanced it is 35 seconds. It takes work, but not being able to touch down with both feet is not the worst thing in the world, honestly.

[QUOTE=verboten1;857464]I taught my wife some basics, but I MADE her take the MSF course. As she gets more experienced, she is becoming a better rider than me. Maybe it's the fresh MSF training, maybe she is just a natural. But I find her keeping up with me in places she shouldn't be, like gravel and ruts (she's on the ninja, I was on my KLR)

Also, about lowering the bike, I can't touch the ground on my bike, KLR 650 lifted with shock and taller tires.

The windshield on the ninja doesn't even come up to my bars, it's a strange feeling, but I 1 foot it everywhere and I'm 5'11"

But dropping the bike I the middle of the road is. 85% of the members on this site need to stop thinking its so bad to lower a bike especially the ninja. You know what is bad? Getting your head ran over because you drop your bike in a turn lane from the 100 of different reasons that can come up.

And yes I 2nd the lowering kit shaving the seat will just make your butt hurt more.

I believe that trackstanding is a rewarding skill to have (and a fun one to practice ) However, our new rider should feel confident. Both feet planted helps new riders feel in control. The thread that your quoted post was in did state that the bike was dropped multiple times in slow speed manuvers while practicing. I think a shorter seat height could've helped prevent some of these mishaps.

everything you read tells you its not a good idea to lower it. I mean I do not plan on trying to make my knees scrape the ground but I would also not like to have to worry about going over speed bumps either. if I do end up going the route of lowering it, it will be done by a professional. id rather spend the extra money to know its done correctly and with messing with the center of gravity the least.

+1 on the roaring toyz kit. I lowered my bike with no issues and I'm an aggressive rider.
I don't have any advice about shaved seats except that there is a diy post on it somewhere...

as a new rider a lowering kit is not going to make a difference. If you start doing track days and are dragging a knee in turns then you may want to go back to stock.

It doesn't take a professional to lower a bike. The key is to not lower it too much (I'd say +2", others might say +1.5"). Lowering it too much is how clearance issues underneath the bike happen. Otherwise lowering a little shouldn't hurt. If you get the roaring toys lowering links, you can lower it one notch at a time to see how it feels.

I had a pregen with a shaved seat. That seat was hard as hell and just hurt a lot.

I've had my share of issues with this.

I put the lowering kit on, it does help a lot. Not had any problems with speed bumps or anything.

My '12 250 had a low seat from Saddlemen, the gel channel one. It was a bit pricy but worth it.

I still have the stock seat off that bike, i'll sell it to you cheap if you want to try shaving but still have a stock seat.

That's because every thing you read is from a person who is just saying what the last guy said be for him. All they are doing is repeating what a person before them said not what they have experienced. As a person that owns a ninja that has been lower now 1.5in I never even get close to hard parts in less I am riding stupid. and speed bumps are not even a issue. even if it was 2in lower it still be fine.

I personally wouldnt go lower than 1 inch. But im also 6 foot and have no issues with the majority of bikes. My gfs was lowered 2inchs, and i think that was too low. But i also dont know if they lowered the front, or at least lowered it the corresponding amount. Turning her bike was waaay different than on my 250, i didnt like it.

^^ This

I would have to measure but my kit is on the 4th hole down. So almost as low as it can go and i don't bottom out or anything. You just have to lower the front to match.

a good pair of boots will give you like at least 1 inch on both feet... and they make boots with extra... i think they go up to 2 or 3 inches.

I dont know where in Penn you live but it may be worthwhile to take a trip to the Revzilla store in Philly. They have a TON of gear that you can try on and see if theres a boot that would work for you. Or, if your far away and do buy online, their exchange policy is superb, so you wouldnt have to buy 5 pairs.

Please, please, please, please, please, get actual boots. At the very least something with a slight heel and ankle protection. Also, trust me, even a pair of work boots or hiking boots with a thick sole and heel will be marginally better than a pair of Converse sneakers. Also, it'll help with reaching the ground. I rode around in a pair of engineer boots for a while, and found that between the thick soles and the blocky cowboy boot-style heel, it was super easy to stand my bike up. When I went to my track boots, I had to adjust, since the soles were thinner and there was next to rise on the heels. Still, the protection is worth it, imho.

Another idea is to find a local shop that carries both bikes and gear. Sit on the various bikes until you find one that matches how you feel on your Ninja (or if at Kawi, just sit on a Ninja) try their boots on and go sit on the bike until you find a pair with a thick enough sole.

I do that with jackets and pants that i buy. I go sit on the bike for awhile to make sure that they are comfortable in the proper position.

I was just in Carlisle, for the car show. Had lunch and watched the MotoGP in the Market Cross Pub (I even got on TV while I was there). If I had know I could have shaved your seat, legs, and even sideburns. I think lowering is the right way to go, although; it doesn't sound like as much fun.

You can, not only shave the seats height, but also the width. I would almost, argue that more gains are made buy shaving the width vs. the height.

I rode around in a pair of engineer boots for a while, and found that between the thick soles and the blocky cowboy boot-style heel, it was super easy to stand my bike up. When I went to my track boots, I had to adjust, since the soles were thinner and there was next to rise on the heels. Still, the protection is worth it, imho.
this.

isn't there a thread in the crash subforum with a picture of someone's foot after wearing converse?

I hope lowering the bike works out for you. If not, you might consider trying some different style bikes (Honda Rebel comes to mind). I'd rather have a bike that fits me (even if it's a cruiser) than a cool bike I was uncomfortable on.

Again, hope tweaking the Ninjette does the job!
