Is my clevis shot?
I was just now on my way home from work when my clutch cable snapped. I pulled over to find this:
It comes completely out. Is my clutch screwed? What am I seeing here? |

Oh hey your picture works now!
Is it broken or did the cable just pop out? Looks like you just rotate it around and put the cable back in.... undo it from the clutch lever to get some more slack. if it broke... replacing those things can be a bitch!

Oh THAT comes completely out! ****! You're boned bro!
Also you're about to become a mechanic! You will need a new gasket for the clutch cover. Before you remove that cover remember to dump all of your oil. As far as exactly how to replace that - I have no idea! But I remember it being somewhat self explanatory?

Nope. All serious. The gaskets are one use gaskets. It would help to have some gasket sealant too.
See how your oil sight glass is part of that clutch cover? There's a lot of oil behind that cover, so you'll need to dump it before you go for it. Why are you doing this instead of taking it to a mechanic? This is at least 1-2 hours of mechanics labor. So figure $200+ to fix. Fix it yourself!

Replace the cable and re-insert the lever into the cavity all the way and then rotate it clockwise. That little notch at the lower end grabs the plunge that pulls the clutch assembly out when you press the hand lever.

Now that i've read motofool's comment and looked at the first picture of the part again it doesn't look sheared (broken). The lines are too clean.
He's almost always right and very knowledgeable. Listen to him!

It is not to common for clutch cables to just snap with out some underlying cause. Make sure when you install your new cable that you check and make sure everything is set correctly. Make sure you have slight play/slack in the lever it should not be completely tight.
How many miles on the bike? ever down?

Read this, please: https://www.ninjette.org/forums/showthread.php?t=201063 Clutch cables can last forever. The problem starts when there is no proper lubrication at the heads of the cable (the little cylinder that connects to the upper lever) and the normal movement introduces bending of the cable due to friction. Cables cannot stand cyclic bending and soon snap.

I have They asked me to bring the bike in and I let them know that my insurance won't cover a tow that far (they're a good 40 miles away), but that I'm competent enough to lube and install the cable myself if they'd be willing to give me a new one, which they were okay with. They let me know that once it's installed they'd like me to bring it in when it's convenient just to give it a look over and make sure nothing else is going on (which I doubt there is)
